So a couple weeks ago I lost my beloved 04 Tacoma in a rollover accident. A wheel flew off of a Lexus heading the opposite direction as me and the wheel went under my truck, bouncing me in the air and then sending me rolling off the highway. Luckily, I only sustained minor injuries.

With the way the used market is now, I think the best bet is to go new, so I walked into a Toyota dealership inquiring about new Tacomas. They have a 22 Tacoma TRD Sport access cab with a 6 speed manual in army green in freight. It's definitely the truck I want down to the exact specs. It's as close to my first gen as I can find... and the army green is probably my favorite color of the Toyotas.

The truck is arriving at the dealer in a couple weeks and I put a $1000 deposit/hold on the truck, however I noticed on the paperwork someone hand wrote +$2500 for "market adjustment" on the price. I'm wondering if this is happening at other dealerships or if they're simply trying to mark it up on me. Anyone have any advice about that? I feel like it's unfair to pay that now just because these vehicles are "hot," but eventually will probably cool off, especially with gas prices going up. Any and all advice welcome.

    Thanks.

Depends on the dealer. This past Monday I picked up a 2022 Sport long bed that I ordered about six weeks prior, no mark-up. I still need to change my profile pic, lol!

Thanks for chiming in. I feel like if I tell them people online are saying they didn't get charged markups I can get it knocked off.

Some dealers are doing it and others aren’t. I saw a Chevy dealer a few weeks ago that had a + $6500 “market adjustment” on Silverados That dealer is in the Charlotte area. It’s unfortunate but you may have to pay it to get the truck you want. That said, shop around.

Chevy dealers suck. Many add $30,000 for the new Corvette.

I would not buy from a Toyota dealer that pulls this shit. Sounds like the OP already signed a contract.

I didn't sign a contract of sale. I made sure of that. It's a tough situation because I was living out of my Tacoma and now I'm staying with friends in the central Oregon area.

Your choice. Pay the price or walk. Don’t count on the greedy fuckers backing down though. They know what is going on in the market and know they can get msrp plus the $2500.

I went to a Toyota dealership that does not do this. Got a nicely equipped sport for 39 grand. No markup, no bs, took 2 hours and was out the door. It just depends on how bad you want that particular truck. Good luck with all that. Me, I would give them the finger...:luvya: maybe even two!

This may be a dumb question, but wouldn't the time to have that discussion with the dealer have been before you gave them your $1,000 deposit?

Depends on your area a bit, but its been a thing for over a year now with in demand vehicles. In this sellers market, the price is the price. They don’t care if you don’t like it because that truck will be sold to someone else by the weekend.
Of course you can try to negotiate or try shopping at another dealer, but if one is doing that near you, chances they all are .

For the dealers who tell you “we only charge MSRP”, the thing to look out for there is ‘mandatory add-ons’. This entails anything from $200 wheel locks, $1k ceramic coating,$400 floor mats, $1500 fabric and paint protection packages etc. That means that they put options on your truck and they can not be removed. You end up buying options and accessories at a 300% markup.

So yes, while they are selling at sticker, they are still making that extra $2500 on those grossly inflated addons.

They also like to have one price if you use them for financing, and higher price if you cut them out and have your own. ( like a credit union for example).

So shop around if you think you can do better and want to do this dance with another dealer. But in one way or another, Tacoma pricing is higher and will be that way for a long while.

Personally, no chance in hell I’m paying a markup. But everyone is different. I’d never be able to enjoy the vehicle if i knew i overpaid.

You walked into a dealership and left 2 hours later with a Sport that was in stock BELOW MSRP? What year did you do this ?

Find another dealer who wont charge anything above MSRP. Insane to think MSRP is a good deal currently.

Hi JJ. It was in December so just a 5 months ago. I did pay MSRP for it though. I got it for the same price as the Toyota option builder on their website. It took me 2 hours because they did not try and BS me with warranty and worthless add ons. They are so busy it's not worth there time since I told them I just want the truck. It was I5 Toyota here in Washington State. They also gave me $28000 bones for my 2018 RAV 4. I was really happy with the whole deal. I have had some knuckleheads tell me I got screwed tho...

Since you are in Oregon, check Wilsonville Toyota. They advertise "No Bull" pricing. Looks like you can get a quote online to compare with the dealer where you put down a deposit.

I'm currently waiting on a 2022 Sport access cab 4x4, at MSRP.
    Pre ordered in October.
Sport access cab is kind of a unicorn Taco from what I've seen.
I guess it depends on how bad you want it....

majority of dealers are marking up the price, the dealer I'm dealing with is doing $2K, I got them to take off $1K. I was seeking this truck for months and finally found it, production is June 8

TRD OFF ROAD, LONGBED, LUNAR ROCK, no leather, or moonroof something I don't want, has everything else

Finding an army green sport access cab with a manual is damn near impossible. Buy that truck NOW!!! If it was an auto SR5 I’d say tell them to shove it, but this truck is more rare than hens teeth. If you don’t you’ll be kicking yourself later. What’s $2500 in the whole scheme of things. If the truck makes you happy do it.
