    I may add that:

    1. The OP needs the truck.
    2. It's configured the way he wants it, and he even likes the color.

If he plans to keep it for 15-20 years, that $2500 amortized is nothing...

What if the dealer charged MSRP, but "delivery" went up because of increasing fuel costs?

I can see auto-makers raising MSRP next model year to match inflation...

Look, my old ride died (well, it runs, but needs a new front suspension; rust monster killed it after 17 years). I need a new one. I wanted Inferno. There were three used ones within 100 miles and in-state back in October. I wasn't going to be that picky. But the color was a showstopper for me, and it was out of production for three model years at that point. If the OP loves the army green, he should buy it. Time is money. And time spent looking for that "other" one does need to weigh against the market adjustment. It's possible you may never find it...

If you’re needing a vehicle pronto, I say snag that one in today’s market. Have the conversation with them that you’ll pay $1500 of that $2500 markup that wasn’t part of your first conversation. But only if they agree to not add any port or dealer installed options. Get in front of that train now to stop it.

Gotcha. MSRP is still a good deal. And knowing a trade was involved in the sale makes more sense now.

In my area new cars in general are all going for 1k - 10k over msrp. EV’s are getting consistent 5k bumps , plus mandatory add-ons. And there is a line to buy them. Its absolutely nuts. Huge demand, very little supply.

Here in San Diego its 3- 8k over MSRP. I bought last week and talked them down to 2k over. I was lucky> production date is 5-30. The dealer right by my house played all kind of jibber jabber games with me and would not delete the dealer add ons that I didnt want. Including upgraded 16" tires. who the hell wants that.

Found a dealer in Vegas that does NOT charge over MSRP, but the guy wouldn't even take a deposit as he said the line was sooooo long.

I purchased my 2021 sport 4x4 at Wilsonville Toyota. The salesmen was a guy named Ray. My truck was in transit, I left a 1k deposit and picked up my truck a week later. Easiest dealership to deal with.

Before giving them the deposit I made sure it was in writing that it wasn't a sale contract and it wouldn't bind me to the price. It's just a refundable hold on the truck. Once it gets in I'll get to test drive it and talk numbers with them.

I don’t know about now, but back in 2017 I bought my taco from Kendall Toyota in Bend below the Costco price and no funny business.

I'm in SoCal and was almost going to buy an Army Green 2022 Off Road with a $5,000 mark up. I asked them to bring it down and they went down to $4,000. Long story short, the Tacoma didn't arrive as soon as they said it would so I went shopping around and found another dealership offering to sell a similar one at MSRP with no mark up. It's going to take about 2 months for it to come but in my opinion, that's worth the wait to save $4k.

I’m in the Portland area and I’ve been looking for a new RAV4 Hybrid for my son. Wilsonville Toyota has a dealer markup of around $2,700 in the form of dealer addon protection and services on all of their new vehicles. Beaverton Toyota does the same thing as well. I think they call it “Clear protection” and theirs is around $1,500.
Ron Tonkin Toyota claims that they don’t charge markup. I am on their list for their next allocation of RAV4 hybrid.

I had 3 dealers in Massachusetts call me Saturday.
Two of them where 5k over MSRP and the other was 2k over but the truck was already listed 2k higher than the others (not sure why, didn’t see options)
Said no thanks I was waiting for my truck

Coincidentally my truck came in Monday
I did pay 1k over MSRP but I did get a life time warranty on the drivetrain for that 1k AND the feeling no one was trying to screw me..
No pressure, no BS, just an honest up front transaction…it was well worth the 1k to me to not deal with some of the A-holes I met along the way.

You're in a bit of a rough spot because you need a vehicle sooner than later. (Making the assumption that you don't have another mode of transport handy). Even so, I'm going to stay on my "stop paying over MSRP" bandwagon. Don't do it. There's nothing special about Toyotas, Chevys, Fords, Hondas, BMWs, or Porsches. Big hunks of metal and plastic, and even with supply chain shortages they're cranking them out.

1)If people keep paying over MSRP, dealers are going to keep asking for it.

2)There are plenty of dealers who aren't playing these games. Find one.

If I were in your shoes, I'd get a rental and find the truck I wanted from a dealer not charging markups.

    It depends on the situation.

If you had no vehicle (wreck, fatal failure), but needed a vehicle, and your only option was to rent one until you found one at MSRP or less, the economics probably don't make sense to wait. They amount of money you spend on the rental may not offset the markup, so you pay over MSRP.

If you have a running vehicle to sell / trade, you can afford to play the waiting game.

Many insurance companies have rental car reimbursement, which would soften the blow. And frankly I'd rather pay for a rental and get the truck I want at a fair price out of pure principle. Even with my 15 mile commute, I'd ride my bike if I had to. There is no scenario where I'd pay over MSRP for a vehicle; I refuse to contribute toward this problem. People need to stop doing this.

And what if a car manufacturer for model year 2023 raises MSRP by 10k, since the market is bearing it? Would you have rather paid 4k over MSRP for a 2022? Or paid MSRP for a 2023...

I learned a long time ago that I need to take care of my business first. I haven't heard of insurance that will give me a rental should my suspension rot out and be unrepairable (i.e. - fatal failure).

I'd rather not have someone tell me (or anyone else for that matter) how to spend my (their) money, no matter how much it pains them to witness it.

I HAD my suspension rot out and become unrepairable. I HAD to get a replacement vehicle. Now, I didn't buy new, because what I wanted wasn't available new. But if I COULD buy new, and NEEDED to buy new, I wouldn't hesitate to pay what I needed to pay. The cost is the cost. The cost isn't necessarily some MSRP number that was published 18 months ago. I keep my cars until the fall apart (literally), so paying a little more doesn't bother me. I am in it for the long haul, just like stocks.

And if you had a ride as old as mine was (15+ years old, north of 100k miles), there are types of insurance you simply aren't going to have on it...
