Been in the car business for 35 years. What is going on now is crazy. Unfortunately a $2500 above MSRP mark up is not bad right now. In addition the MSRP bump, a lot of dealers are putting on/in extra accessories with high markups. Industry expectations are we have about another year of this short supply situation.

Keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep at night. I'm sure the $10 pinstripes, $20 VIN etching, and nitrogen in the tires makes up for the rip off. Sorry, I'm not buying it. And yes, I worked in the car business years ago- thankfully for a dealer that would never treat customers this way.

I don't think BeachTruck was justifying it, but rather saying it's commonplace right now. The dealership I bought from a bit over a year ago for $2,500 below MSRP is adding 10% to MSRP today. The crazy marked-up accessories are put on by Southeast Toyota Distributors, not the dealership....at least in this area.

Everything seems to be marked up now. I was pricing a 2wd Ranger the other week, just to pass the time. Last year, 2021 the same truck was about 2k cheaper with 4wd. That was list price with a discount from Ford. I pressume the more expensive 2wd had a market adjutment applied to list price, no discount, and what ever bump in price from '21 to '22. Ford also went from 18" to 17" wheels on the SA pkg, getting a little less for your money overall.

    I just found that interesting.

I figure Toyota trucks, will be around. When and if the market comes around. Which isn't any consultation if you need a truck today, and want a Toyota.

"$2500 above MSRP is not bad right now" sure sounds like a justification to me. Accessories being added by distributors is one thing- you're actually getting something of value. The "protection packages" added by dealers are simply a rip off and many are using them as excuses for adding on ridiculous mark ups.

Yes, I have the luxury of borrowing a friends car, however I am staying in remote Oregon, so a trip to Bend (biggest city nearby) is about 5 hours round trip. To "shop around" in my situation involves a lot of time and gas. With that said, I did check the inventory of every dealer in the state, and there was only one that had this same truck I want. They refused to sell it to me for being outside their PMA.

The army green trd sport access cab with a 6-speed manual is hard to come by, but the one I reserved is now on the floor at the dealer, so I'm going in today to discuss. I'm going to try to get the 2500 removed. I've done my homework and have built good rapport with my salesman. Wish me luck.

    Umm.. No.

When the economic analysis is performed, it may make economic sense to pay the markup then to wait it out. I've stated the costs factors elsewhere:

    1. You have no working vehicle. You cannot borrow another vehicle for your daily / routine needs. Consider the costs of a rental against the markup.
    2. At least in my state, I must maintain insurance on the non-working vehicle until I surrender the plates. This opens up other costs, such as no longer being continuously insured and getting discounts should I surrender the plates and cancel the insurance on the non-working vehicle. Consider the increase in insurance premiums against the markup.
    3. Time spent shopping around for that new vehicle. I work during normal business hours. Consider loss of time-off against the markup.
    4. Money spent traveling to get that new vehicle from a non-local dealer. Do I need to get on a plane, take a taxi to the dealer, etc. Consider those costs against the markup.

And what if you couldn't wait? I don't know how often you buy cars, but I have owned four vehicles in my life. A '78 Buick, and '89 Olds, a '06 Ford, and the '18 Taco I bought last fall. I've only bought two vehicles from dealers in my 35 years driving. It's safe to say I don't car shop enough to have an established relationship with a dealer. I keep my vehicles until they fall apart and are not worth repairing. I had hoped to make it through the winter with the Ford, but the rust bunnies had other plans, and my cross-member rotted and failed. After 16+ years, it was time to go.

If you can't afford to wait, there is some point where it makes economic sense to pay a markup, and I am not one to judge someone who has made the decision to do so, no matter how much it pains you. Sure, you can claim that you can borrow a car, but when you need the vehicle to commute to work, run errands, and travel, there is only so much borrowing you can do. Everyone needs to do what they need to do, even if their action goes against your grain.

OK. You've made it clear that you're OK letting dealers rip you off. Keep doing it. Please.

Why do you care what people do with their money? It's really no one's business what others do

Are you talking to me? Perhaps you could learn to use the quote feature?

Assuming you are- if people have a penchant for letting dealers rip them off, it makes it harder for those of us who value the money we've earned to get reasonable deals. If you let dealers rip you off, it makes it easier for them to keep doing it. But please, by all means, pay over MSRP and justify it with absurdities. You're paying MORE than the manufacturer suggests you should pay. Let that sink in.

Go and hustle the dealers to pay below MSRP, don't use the excuse that others are causing it. I paid a measly $1k over msrp not happy but a $20 bill added to my payments means nothing . And if anyone thinks prices will come down in a few months cause of gas prices wake Up, the supply chain issues will either raise the price or keep them as is

I am glad prices are starting to come down in other parts of the country. My wife and I just looked at a brand new 2022 Ford Raptor at Oklahoma’s highest volume Ford dealer. The dealer wants $35,000 market adjustment on top of the factory $85,000 MSRP. We told them they are CRAZY. We were in my wife’s Sequoia platinum, so I guess the dealer GM thought we could afford it (and/or were crazy enough to buy it). He swore the lowest market adjustment that they have sold a Raptor is $18,000, and he would NOT sell this one for that. According to him (at Ford dealer) and both large Toyota dealerships in my area, the market is at the all time high right now in the OKC area - everyone is expecting auto loan interest rates to increase and significant factory MSRP increases for 2023 models. Obviously - I am not buying a Raptor anytime in the near future!
    - Please don’t shot the messenger for relaying the new truck situation where I am located -

I think you're missing the point.

There are instances where you need to get a car. Shopping around takes time and resources. If you can afford to wait, all the power to you. If you cannot wait, have no car, and the car you want and need is at a markup over MSRP, there is a trade-off to make.

You state do not pay over MSRP, and wait it out. My reply is, what should the person do who cannot wait because of the need for a car. You haven't addressed any of the cost-factors I provided that should be examined when shopping for a replacement vehicle. You also stated that you could afford to wait to buy your wife's new car. How long did you wait? Did she have a vehicle to use in the interim? If she had a working vehicle, then the dynamics change big time.

The position you have taken reminds me of this guy I met on the street in Montreal about 20-25 years ago. I am in Montreal this one night, and the Canadiens were playing. The game was sold out, but there were scalpers on the street. Me and my buddy wanted to go. (This was at the old Forum). I went around from scalper to scalper. There was this other guy shopping, too. This one scalper wanted $80 for the pair, I passed. I thought I could do better. So did the other shopper. After I went around and found out that I couldn't, I returned to the scalper. The other shopper was there, too, hoping the scalper would drop his price. Well, I asked the scalper if he still had them, and he replied, "Yes." Then I told him I'd take them for $80. The other shopper was upset that I took the scalper's asking price. He tried to interrupt my purchase and the scalper told him, "You had your chance" and he walked away...

Different people have different perceptions of what is a fair cost to them.

To me, it's absurd to go without a vehicle, pay for cabs and rental vehicles, call in favors for rides, and spend a lot of time to find the car I want and need in a effort to get the vehicle at an arbitrary price that probably hasn't been adjusted for inflation.

Just walked away from an MSRP deal on a TRD OR because the dealership would make me buy a “protection package”. Truck was in transit wasn’t even on the lot and they said they wouldn’t remove it and they’d find somebody to buy it.

Order a Ram TRX for $10k under MSRP and have a better truck for way cheaper. The links are for three of the larger dealerships that offer the discounts.

Sad part is he's probably right. If a dealer can charge these prices and still sell trucks before they even get on the lot they'd be crazy not to.

If you want something sadly we must pay for it, sad but true.
The truck I have coming in the dealer was firm on $2k over msrp, the dealing was going great till this point, but I got them to take off $1k, of course I wasn't happy but I was satisfied cause 7 dealers had issues getting what want including this dealer ...so with $1k over msrp vs msrp it comes out to $20 more per month
