, not too long ago I posted a thread concerning a slight whine between 35 and 45 mph

I took my truck in yesterday to have them listen to it. They test drove a brand new SR 5 and found the same issue so they opened up a ticket with Toyota.

For those that don't know what this is, it's a very slight medium (440Hz ) pitched whine or harmonic that comes from the truck at about 35 to 45 miles an hour where is heard the best.

Those that might have the same sound may not realize it because it's so slight. I would say I Drive your truck in silence on a smooth road and listen closely between 35 and 50 miles an hour for any harmonic tones in the sound field.

I am currently at a dealership and drove a brand new - 16 SR 5. Lo and behold the same harmonic frequency was heard as the tech indicated.

If you have this issue or think you might have this problem take it in and have them open up a ticket. Many won't notice it.

The more tickets that are opened with the same issue the more likely Toyota will create a TSB rather than have it serviced and taken apart buy local dealership tech who' may not be well trained and experienced on it at this time.

Every new truck returned for an issue is sent to Toyota. Even if solved.

My OR is silent at all speeds. I have a manual though if that makes any difference. Do you have a auto?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll take it for a drive tonight to see if I hear the same. Had it on the freeway yesterday and didn't notice anything getting up to speed, but I also had the radio going.

Speed dependent? RPM dependent? Constant frequency between those speeds?

Speed related but not tires or RPMS as the pitch (440HZ) stays the same regardless of wheel rpm or engine rpm the . Loudest at 40 MPH in any gear.. On any surface. Automatic trans.

It kind of goes in and out and completely disappears at 55 or under 35.

Could be harmonic turbulence but they taped up many areas of the truck and drove it and didn't change the output. Since I drove a random SR5 off the lot and heard the same thing I am not as worried about it,

well if all the auto's are producing that whine, they will come back as saying its normal.

now if yours did it and maybe 2 or 3 others out of 10+ I could see an issue, but not if all of them are making the same whine.

Mine does it around the same speeds as yours. I thought it was the way the wind hit the vortex generators between the mirror and the window at that speed (sort of like the old deer whistles on cars). I'll take it to Toyota and see what they say. 4x4 auto trans.

Sounds like the same issue Highlanders had back in 2011.

Yeah it could be harmonic turbulence.....I am thinking maybe the air dam? I may
remove it and see what happens. It's not a loud whine though and it does "break up here and there not a steady noise.. You do have to listen for it, but once you hear it. You will hear it all the time. Most people would not notice it unless they are looking for it.

I always look for odd noises when I buy a new car. It's what I do.....:anonymous:

I spend all day listening to noises and shit on customer cars, last thing I want to do is nitpick my own apart.

No wind noise would be more intermittent..UNLESS the air dam up front is causing a turbulence harmonic.

You are a better man than me....I am hoping my case will solve another's issue when Toyota central gets involved. I am also glad my service tech did not take that attitude.

They identified it, Then drove a couple new trucks and heard the same thing which caused them to open a ticket with Toyota,

They could have said "Meh They all do that" without looking into it..Like my experience with GM and the harmonic balancer on my Vette or the weeping oil pan gasket (an $850 fix), or My Hondas shuddering power seat rails..... YES they all may do that but that means it needs replacing ..

and you'd rather spend your life worrying about a barely audible noise? I have better shit to worry about.
