Had to tow a 99 prerunner out of local toyota dealer because repairs were too much. They want $1334.00 for shocks, 2200 for brakes, pads and rotors and drums, and my favorite...$3400.00 for a driveshaft.gave the nice lady the website here and towed it to a local shop. I made sure to point out the driveshaft hasn't been greased at all. Dealer want over $8400.00 in repairs, but offered 2000 for trade in...they gonna do it all for less than 2900. Maybe less if driveshaft is good

Big fancy building and all those new vehicles make for a High Overhead !!

Some people are quite happy paying those rates .

It is nice to have the option to go else where.

Just think if the dealer was the only one allowed to service your vehicle

Jesus christ! $1300+ for shocks? I paid under a grand for my Kings!

Here's a little better estimate for the cost:

    $300 = 4 bilstein 5100's
$300(ish) drive shaft form junk yard
$400 rotors, pads and drums (good ones)

And a half drunk monkey could install all this stuff, too - do it yourself = zero labor.

Thats almost as bad as the used OEM yellow bilstein's routinely being sold in our 1st gen classifieds.

Honestly, dealerships have taken over the section of the market once occupied by the "corner gas station" guys

Yea, the local shop I towed it too is actually going to have her call the state b.a.r. . I went over everything, And broke it down. Like my 5100's from wheelers. Also told the shop guys about the driveshaft zerks. Gonna grease them up and test drive.hell, they said they could get 10 one piece driveshafts for what the dealer was charging..lol

They said they could do both rear shocks for 120.00 with the 4600 series. And we got her a 3a discount on labor..lol.

I couldn't believe the dealer offered her 2000 on a trade in. I told her she could easily sell it for twice that and would have to change her phone number cause it'll ring off the hook..

I've seen other dealers try to charge $1000.00 for a starter on a 04 Honda civic...

What dealership was this? Mine was originally bought in Fremont, a couple minutes from NUMMI where they built the truck. Service history indicates it was serviced in Hayward after that. Can't believe they're trying to charge you that much. Why did it have to be towed?

Not my truck. I'm the 3a tow guy. Can't name the dealer, but it's in Berkeley. Poor lady was in tears over it.

Toyota of Berkeley is garbage. I had my 1995 MR2 Turbo there for some work. They were horrendous

She had a minor accident, and took it to the dealer.where she's only had it worked on since new. And they tried to total get over on her.

They cater to people mostly who are older. They buy a new Toyota from them. Drive 5,000 miles a year. Keep it 25 years and dealer serviced

Their service bay is full of older Toyota’s With very very low mileage

You don’t have enthusiast Toyota owners in there ...

If any of you have lived in Berkeley for a long time, you would know the demographic easily

    Uh, a tool box
I was at Beaman Toyota in downtown Nashville TN, ordered some touch up paint for my 2004 Tacoma. Just curious, I went the service counter and asked the guy how much they'd charge to replace the shocks on my truck. Dude was a total asshole, punched bunch of numbers in the calculator and told me it would be $700 labor. Told me to go to the parts department(where I just was at ordering touch up paint) to get the price for parts. Didn't even ask me for the vin on my truck, or if it was 2wd or 4wd, basically he just told me to go fuck off, we don't want your business.

Please tell me where to find a half drunk Monkey Maybe in California things are simple to change .

In no way would I wish a new to wrenching person the ordeal of changing shocks and brakes on the trucks I work on here

The liquid brine works wonders .

That is like me saying anyone Should be able to build a New Frame because I find it easy

even with a minor accident why the hell were they trying to replace parts that had noting to do with the accident?

yeah, BBB needs informed of that one. especially if she has a quote to compare.

kind of agree with you on that. thankfully I've worked on my own but those not familiar with the salt belt would freak out easily

I assume you're referring to me here...

I'm pretty sure you don't think I literally meant a drunk money could do it. It was merely a statement to illustrate the ridiculous cost the dealer was charging for what is at most, easy to moderately difficult to do, even for a first timer.

Are the Tacomas in your state different from the ones here in Cali?

All the parts, rotors, pads, even the driveshaft are bolt on parts, no bleeding of brakes, no engine disassembly, nothing. If you know righty-tighty, lefty-loosey, you can replace all those parts. Spend 5 minutes on youtube and you'll have everything you need. You don't even need a floor jack, and can do it all with the provided bottle jack.

I'll give you that replacing the front shocks on a 1st gen taco would be considered slightly above drunk monkey standards, but it's not that hard, especially when you go rent the proper tools to do it (for free) from an autoparts store.
