salt belt states, we have to deal with rust on a yearly basis. he was referencing the different climates and how different things are to "easily" change (read- not when they are rusted to shit :D ).

That pretty much nails my point.

I really can`t talk our Shop rate is $120.00 an hour and we have about 4 weeks of work on the books for 4 1/2 techs with more coming in every day .

I agree with you *if* and only if the vehicle is from the southwest/other relatively rust free areas.

I've only had the misfortune of working on a car from the salt belt a few times, and every time it sucked. Bolts round off, break off, parts are seized on... eventually you just give up and sawzall everything off and just replace everything.

I've got an '04 Honda Civic. Starter went out. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy that job was to do. I think I lingered a couple of beers over it. Barely got dirty. I'm guessing the book on that is an hour or so. How does an organization that charges by the book hour justify $1000 for that?

I'm honestly asking. I can see a corrupt place telling you that you also have to have the water-cooled conutenary valve replaced, which is an 8 hour job, "justifying" a $1000. But how, if all they are quoting is that starter, do they document $1000?

Edit: I guess it's really the same question about the dealership that you towed the taco from. The hours don't justify those prices.

It’s code for “I don’t want to do this work unless you’re dumb enough to pay this ridiculous price.”

Maybe in today`s Correct world you just can`t say we don`t want this job.

So price it so high the customer will have to say no. If they agree it is bid high enough to farm it out

    Makes perfect sense

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
People want to buy those new cars using someone elses money. Zero down, zero interest for 48, 72 months. Somebody's got to pay for others freebies. Pawpaw speaking here: Nothin is free, younguns. My dealership is still okay for most parts. Normal service parts, filters, plugs etc are actually more reasonable than aftermarket. For repairs I can't handle it goes to my buddy's shop.

I live in Berkeley and use their parts shop on Shattuck sometimes. I would never take my truck for work for but I buy an occasional part if its the same price as online. Parts guys are pretty cool there.

Parts guys are always cutting deals there. I was just pissed they would screw someone like that..but that's the world today with most dealers. Lose on the sale, make it up on the service side.
