So on the 19th I took my taco in for rear diff fluid change (63,000 miles) and standard oil change. I specifically told the guy checking me in "this is and LSD rear so make sure they put the correct fluid I'm it" he acknowledges and my truck is taken in the bay. After waiting I finally get my truck, pay, and take off. I heard a grinding and thought maybe the clutches weren't wet yet. Drove it about 5-6 miles and stopped at one of our Dept. headquarters and spoke to Jeff (tigerfan00) about it.

The noise was a grinding type noise mainly during turning. The whole truck would shake when it happened. I figured the rear was locked up and promptly returned to the dealer. They made the mechanic and service guy ride with me to conform my complaint and confirmed. Manager comes to me 30 minutes later and says they put the wrong fluid in the rear, but were putting the correct fluid in now. Manager verbally told me if anything happens as result that it would be taken care of. The second ticket just said $0.00 paid, fluid put in rear diff but nothing about their error.

I opened a case with Toyota national customer service today and got a case number.

How much damage from a locked rear for about 10-12 miles ON PAVEMENT with turning could have occurred?

ok so your rear end was locked, or they put the incorrect fluid in? if they put the wrong fluid in, you'll hear noise becuase of the gears chattering, but no damage will result in that short of time. if you were driving it around locked up, thats another story. your post is not clear.

Its actually the same fluid, but they are just supposed to put an additive in the LSD diffs, so it really is not a big deal at all. they just forgot the additive. I wouldnt let it ruffle your jimmy, we all make mistakes.

It was locked, hence the rear grinding and truck shaking. I get that we make mistakes, but when i specifically reminded them you think they'd listen. The manager said it was a new guy working on my truck. I'm not sure if there was damage or not... I just don't want the rear to grenade down the road as result of this.

From what the manager said the incorrect fluid made the rear lock.

I hope nothing more than this inconvenience happens. If not it would be nice for Toyota to stand tall and correct any mistakes.

Btw, what dealer did you go too?

if you have the LSD, your rear end wasnt locked. you dont have a locker, unless you installed one yourself.... you were hearing the gears make noise because the LSD additive was not used.

you can use any gear fluid you want in the differentials, that doesnt matter. The only different thing is the LSD additive that is required by the trucks with a mechanical LSD. your truck isnt broken, the ass end isnt going to grenade down the road. its a really simple job to do yourself, i cant imagine how much they charged you to do it...

Its was just the clutch packs chattering from the lack of LSD friction modifier additive, these are a gearless LSD. No harm will come to your diff from driving it 10 miles like that. It sounds like your dealer corrected their mistake, so carry on with life as you knew it before.:)

All the additive does is lubricate the clutch packs so they won't chatter around corners and annoy the owner of the truck. It would take a LONG time running without additive in there to do any damage. Don't sweat it, the truck's fine. Next time do it yourself and you'll know it was done right. Although old gear oil is about the nastiest smelling stuff to ever come out of a vehicle.

To be fair though, landphil is probably one of the best "techs" on here, that I've seen at least.
