Drive fast with lots of stop and go traffic, my fronts lasted 65K and back are still original at 110k.

The standard transmission allows you to use the engine to slow down (i.e. downshifting) when slowing down. Saves a ton of wear on the Brakes but does put a little more strain on the clutch assy.

Dealer told me the same thing one was at 4mm one was at 3mm only 45000miles..they gave me a great deal on changing my brakes ,cabin filter and sparks plugs , all this for a the low price this of 689.00. So you know how that went told them thanks but no thanks..walked out.funny thing is that dude that gave me the quoted still wanted me to leave him good review on the survey.and if I did "he'll hook me up with part".any ways spent like 200 and got a buddy to do it..they make it seem like you need them now..but thruth is I could of kept going with the same pads for a while longer.but just rather Change them .

I changed rear pads on an '06 Avalon a few months ago. Odometer read 182,000 miles. Had 3mm left on the rear pads. No....this was not the 2nd or 3rd change - but the first.

You must be doing a lot of stop-n-go driving. Pads are considered worn at 1mm - although - I would not wait for 1mm - especially in your case.

I have an 07 sport with 50k. Was told 6 mos ago I need a brake job, and that I have 2mm left. I bought new oem pads, and have them one hand. But, I've still not changed them because they drive just fine to me. Slow and steady wins the race.

Yeah, same here. We have a mechanic shop that we trust 100% and they've done all of our family's cars for years. The only time I'm going back to the dealer now is for a recall.

To the OP - can you get them to show you how little is left? Is it really that worn down?

I took it somewhere else and they said the same thing without me telling them what the dealer said. I also looked at them myself while it was up in the air. So I had them change out the fronts. It was much cheaper than doing it at the dealer.

I'm not sure how much longer I would've had on the pads, but better safe than sorry.

You live in the city that's a lot harder on brakes. I live in the sticks and a 100K is not out of the question. Yes a stick does make a difference. Just put front brakes on the wife's Scion 98,750 miles she too drives a stick.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
X2 Always safe then sorry. Brakes and tires are two things you don't wan't to try to maximize your "value" and wait to replace them until the bitter end. Best to play it safe and keep good pads and rubber at all times.

I looked into having my rotors turned when I needed them and it was within $10 of just buying new. Figured it wasn't worth the downtime because swapping I can do myself. Seems turning rotors has sort of become obsolete, at least with the shop prices around me anyways.
Toyota brakes last as long as the driver allows them to. I've swapped pads on the front of 2 friend's Tacomas under 25k miles while mine lasted 70k. If you off road frequently, traction control and driving aids will chew up your brakes pretty good, so will city driving and towing.

When I traded my '09 in I had 6mm remaining on the stock front pads. 48k miles... Either you ride the shit out of the brakes, they are bsing you, or there is a mechanical issue...

Back about 09 I took my 2008 Taco in to the Stealership (in San Angelo Tx) for one of the recalls and they said I needed my pads and shoes changed (only 20 K miles), they offered to do it for something like $200.00 or so. I said they shouldn't be bad so soon should they, they said they had about 25% left on them. I told them I would wait and picked up a set at Auto Zone on the way home. Pulled the wheels off the following week and the pads had virtually the same as the new one still in the box. Only used them for recall stuff after that.

Not completely accurate... if your wheel shakes during braking then your rotors are wrapped and depending how bad turning them may or maynot solve the issue.

Much more commonly you need to check for scoring on the rotor, especially if you ran your pads down to the bitter end. Run your finger across the surface of the rotor from the center to the outside, where the brake pad touches. If it feels smooth your good. However any bumps or ridges, even minor, should probably be have the rotors turned or get a second opinion on it.

Minor scoring isn't so much a safety issue, but it will eat through pads like nobody's business due to the pad not contacting the rotor evenly from the ridges.
