Dealers almost always lie about what you need, mark things up substantially and use their slime-ball sales tactics to pressure you into doing things. Brake jobs usually cost quite a bit anywhere. If you can do them yourself you can save a lot of coin.

When I was a little guy, my parents used to get their Chevy Caprice serviced at the dealer. Every year or two they would say your "idler arm" needs to be replaced for $150 or so... so they did it. When I got to HS age I wondered what an idler arm was... it was literally a small metal arm that served as a pivot arm for your steering... no torque on it, it doesn't really wear out at least not at 1 year intervals...

Some of the BS just makes me

As long as the rotor is in spec and not distorted to start with, they done need machined. A little sand paper work and youre good. By the time they do need machined, just buy a new set. They're only slightly more expensive than machine work.

Did you not see the 6 or 7 posts before yours that talked about machining the rotors?

    Starting with literally post #2...

I really can`t fault service writers for pushing what they are told to sell.

I don`t know anyone that even still cuts rotors just replace .

When mechanics don't even want to press out some control arm bushings, and instead sell the customer a whole new set of control arms, I'm not surprised they don't cut rotors.

I'm sure they still have the equipment, but they'd have to dust it off and get one of the "old timers" to run it for them.

At a certain point, they're parts replacers, not technicians.

You can get a rotor and pad kit from rock auto for $150. Did Centric rotors and pads @100k opted for the corrosion coated rotors that wont rust.

The dealer wants to resurface to rotors for you. Then install pads. IMO I'd just replace both an call it a day.

I had mechanic telling me that the that throttle body needs to be cleaned because the butterfly valve is sticky. I asked him to walk me to the car and show me. At first he did not want, but I told him just show me and I'll pay whatever he will ask for the job. To his embarrassment he could not find the throttle body because it was a diesel engine. I called his bullshit, and he felt miserably. Some mechanics are just assholes.

That's awesome. You should have asked him to change the spark plugs while he was in there. :cookiemonster:

That's dangerous. He might charge me for glow plugs instead. Plug is a plug, right?

HahahahahahhahahahahhaHhHAhahah:rofl: you, my good man, just became my hero! seriously, good for you. Hope these assholes without a moral backbone(ex.: it's my job to lie to customer to sell them stuff they don't need.... Then get a job where you don't have to be dishonest every day you work, could you imagine how that kills your true self esteem or self worth, saddest part is they don't realize how much that affects your mind and perspective) learn their lesson

They may have some kind of runout machine they have either bought or made. Basically, just checking for warping. It's done at the plant on the new hub assemblies using a laser, but old timers used to use a setup like this:

dial indicator on a flexible arm or some type of mount.

This is even better. Because it was my son's car (you all know what I think about diesel) I did turn on my cell phone camera and got the whole conversation (including walking to the car and "inspecting") on the video. Unfortunately it is all in Polish, so no value here ;). He still tried to safe his face buy saying "Sorry, this particular car does not have it, but most od diesel cars have throttle body" looking at the engine with disbelief (see picture below). For privacy I pixelated his face. Poor, stupid dude.
