A lot? Sounds like he should hold his hands over his head as he is being robbed...

Friend just had a chevy V6 replaced in his astro van. Cost him $3500 bucks in total with a rebuilt long block from Jasper engines... And done at the local Chevy dealer to boot.

That is labor and everything. $5000 was for the block alone. Yeah...hard pass.
I'll post pics when I tear into it in a couple weeks.

A broken timing chain? Really? How the hell is it even going to crank with a broken timing chain?

I'm no mechanic, (nor an idiot) but that "sounds" like a rod bearing (crank end) or wrist pin failure. If forced to wager, I'd guess a main or lower end bearing.

Just starting to do the swap now. Cut into the oil filter and it was full of metal flakes.

My '15 got a new short block under warranty a few weeks ago, a bad rod bearing on cylinder 6 at 10,500 miles. The price for the short block was not listed on the invoice unfortunately, it would have been interesting to know.

I rebuilt a 22-RE once in my 93 Toyota. It all started out as a head gasket job, then figured the timing components were right there, then found pieces of piston skirt in the oil pan. It made a slight ticking sound (same as every Toyota I've ever driven) but never showed signs of a serious Internal Failure.

Just throw a turbo on that thing and people might start going ooh and ahh at your diesel powered 2nd gen.

By the sound I'd would've guessed top end but after looking at the flakes in the filter...... that's rod/main bearing material, most likely a rod bearing

Don't forget to flush the oil cooler if you have one!

Would it of been better if the tech (knowing what it was) charged 1-2 hrs at say $120/hr to pull the pan looking for metal etc? Depending on what he saw he might then need a few more hours to pull the upper pan. Then confirm what he said in the first place. Internal failure!

Good luck OP. Probably not what you wanted to do on your Independence Day weekend but look on the bright side, you'll know more about your truck than most!!

How do you figure $900 in parts? I've got the truck taken apart to where I just need to drop the tranny and pull the engine, which I will do at my brother's work since he has fancy tools (i.e. Pneumatic transmission jack, car lift, etc.). I haven't needed to buy parts other than the engine, fluids, filters, and just the regular maintenance things (spark plugs, thermostat).
