I am thinking whatever you find that is destroyed when you do a full teardown could add up to that in parts

it is a bullshit guess but ...??? :anonymous:

Oh gotcha. Fortunately everything else has been pretty clean. I got my new engine last night and G and R Auto Wreckers in Oregon sent me a complete engine with the harness and accessories. I will end up using my old harness and sensors, since it is a 2011 harness and mine is 2007, but it is nice that if I do come across anything that is broken otherwise, I can use the new engine stuff.

I have decided to get the crank journals machined and replace the bearings and one connecting rod. Then put it all back together.

AKDude, what are you going to do with the old engine? Part it out? ;)

Yeah I was going to part it out since my new one is so complete. Do you need/want anything off it?

So the reason for the high quote, the dealer started the engine, decided there's an internal failure and quoted you to replace it with the diesel engine that it sounds like, probably didn't realize it was a gas motor nor smart enough to know the difference. This forum could have saved you the time towing it with the video you posted, I'm not a mechanic but I can diagnose an internal failure from just the video.

Seriously though I'm curious to see what you find when you finally open it up.

Thanks! Loading up the truck in about an hour to take to my brother's shop. Pulling and all nighter. Hopefully will post good news and a firm diagnosis in the morning.

If the oil was brown it sounds like the sump had water/antifreeze in it neither one is a good lubricant and being heaver that oil that's what the pump was picking up so along with bearings it most likely had head gasket issues.

Alright, for those of you following the thread, I have completed my engine swap (which was the priority) and will begin tear down tomorrow of the old engine. I have pictures and explainations to follow.

Milkshake oil is head gasket related. How did the coolant look when you drained it?

    Drum roll please! :rockband::rimshot:

I finally broke down the engine enough to find the problem.

The cams were in good condition, as you can see here.

I broke down the bottom side of the engine and found the upper oil pan to have piles of metal flakes and then I started checking the bearings and found this...
    https://youtu.be/1wLehg-gRo0

This is the bearing taken apart. The thin piece of metal (the bearing) pictured is supposed to be inside of each bearing housing. The loose one was completely disintegrated. All of the bearing were scuffed up and very rough. You can see how worn down the disintegrated bearing (bottom) is compared next to the better one (top).

So moral of the story folks: change your oil! I am sorry to have had to pay for others' poor maintenance. On the plus side, I have a 2007 truck with an engine with only 38k miles and it runs like a dream! Here is a condensed video of the 25ish hours of labor I put into the engine swap.

Now you've basically got a back up motor (if you rebuild the bottom end) that you could part out, sell off, or even save in case some knuckle head forgets to change the oil in this one......

Accept for the head gasket failure which caused the bearing failure.

There wasn't a head gasket failure. The oil was only milky the one time I changed it last year, when I first got the truck. Subsequent oil changes were clean.

Now that I know what a good engine sounds like, I think that my engine was bad the whole time I had it. It always had a small tick. I chalked it up to being the "Toyota tick" everyone complains about. I compared it to a friend's 4.0l V6 in his 4Runner a few months ago and mine was significantly louder. The bearing just finally gave out after a five hour drive through a couple mountain ranges. It was only a matter of time.
