SLU solenoid that controls TC clutch is active when tranny temp reachs about 110°. TC gets fully locked based on ecu tables for each gear/throttle position/speed.
We mostly turned TC locking off in 3rd on early tunes. Never ECU calibrations have TC lock in 2nd.

So, does your tune directly manipulate flex lockup? Or, indirectly by manipulating the the full lock tables?

disconnecting the battery will not reset learned values. this needs to be done with techstream or a bidirectional scan tool with that capability.

You might try pinning the transmission too :notsure:

In the tune,, we can manipulate when to turn SLU On/Off (one set of tables) and when to fully lock(another set of table).
Also, there is a dependency on the engine torque.
Supposedly, there are transmission pressure tables that could be modified.
Slipping phase of TC commonly exists in lower speed driving.
At high speeds you want to be locked, otherwise tc temp goes up.

Unfortunately that’s debatable . It’s been advised by this ‘you tube guy, a Toyota tech “ to change the fluid. Although a great number of members here despise him, A greater number of members here and I dont. A couple hundred spent for a fresh fluid is better than dealing with issues like this later . In fact, tranny shifts smoother after the fluid change . ( not flush)

Worth trying I think, I recall reading some threads here where early 3Gs were coming underfilled (by a quart or more) though not sure how widespread that is.

I would try running 93 octane, clean the tb and mass air sensor, make sure the plugs are still good then check the transmission fluid and see if that helps. Also reach out to a tuner and I bet the tuner might throw a tune on there for you to try out and see if that helps. This can be done fairly cheap except for the tuner. If the tuner and you can come to an agreement that if it doesn't fix it then no charge but give him something for his time. A tune only takes a few minutes but I would be willing to bet that better fuel and a tune may fix it, as were all getting shitty gas these days as were getting a cheaper grade of oil these days. If that doesn't do it then maybe a fluid change and try that would be another set before going 15 hours to a specialist. I would unload it before spending money on a transmission. Look at that thread on Cosco gas, I don't use it because I prefer to stick with Shell 93.

If you check the service schedule, the only mention from Toyota on changing fluid is if you tow a lot, drive at a lot of slow speeds or have some other unusual use (low mileage + lots of sitting time, or primarily high temperature use... only AZ summers).

I don't despise him; I just don't take his word alone, as gospel. I'm a believer in changing the fluid more often than recommended, so those two things are not mutually exclusive.

His opinion is based on his subjective experience; he only sees the broke stuff and he makes a correlation. People do lie when it comes to their maintenance history. So, I weigh it accordingly. Ignoring any other possible causes, to me, paints Toyota as infallible in all other aspects, except fluid intervals.

And Aisin recommends 2 year/12,500 miles...just sayin. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

Unless you have a good trusting relationship with your dealer, take what they say and recommend cautiously. A new tranny is easy money for them.

I'm trying to understand how you are able to monitor the flex lockup vs based off an ON/OFF only display from SLU. I was under the understanding, flex lockup is accomplished through a PWM signal to the appropriate solenoid feeding the lockup clutch.

I'm trying to understand this post. Op, your title says Really? Need Guidance...

Most here that are replying are giving you Guidance. Most say check trans fluid and or flush/change. What do you have to lose
You keep arguing about it... " Dealer says it's good, don't" If you want to believe dealer, why are you here disputing everyone's. Whom try to give you Guidance???...

If you’re near Scotts Valley, and decide you do need a new transmission, then look up 4x4 And More. They just replaced the manual tranny in my 2007. Wasn’t cheap but was several $thousand less than what dealer quoted you. You can first go to the Toyota official online parts counter to see what a new tranny MSRP is and figure on 7 hours labor to pull an replace which includes swapping the transfer case over. Don’t go through the local dealer, I called two local Toyota dealers for a price on the transmission and got ridiculous prices - way over what Toyota lists as MSRP for a transmission. Only disadvantage was it took 3 weeks for the transmission to show up at the repair shop.

I think its tune related and cheap gas. Others had similar issues and better gas took care of it. I also think a tune will help as tuners have had complaints on similar issues and a tune fixed it. Op why not try these first and report back.

We don't have access to PWM, duty cycles and line pressures at the moment. Supposedly all these are coming
BTW, toyotas TCU data list doesn't not have line pressure, duty cycle etc.
So we have to use what we have available and adapt.
