Dealer says Toyota warranty not available

I just paid for a Tacoma from local Toyota dealer with low miles which qualifies for a prepaid maintenance warranty through Toyota Financial Services (less than 9 years old and under 125k miles to qualify). But dealer told me the Toyota warranty is not available here in Idaho but they can sell me a warranty through a third party company.

I called Toyota Financial and they said it is available here but dealer may choose to not offer it. So I called another Idaho Toyota dealer and they said they would be glad to sell the Toyota warranty to me -no requirement that they sold the vehicle, and they have no idea why my dealer would not offer it.

I took it to an independent mechanic I have used in past for repairs prior to purchase and he found no problems with it. I never intended to buy such a warranty anyway, because, hey, its a Tacoma with low miles so I figure it is worth the risk. But dealer lying about the warranty makes me very suspicious that maybe dealer knows something is wrong the the truck?

Any thoughts?

Buy the warranty elsewhere, or don't. I'd not go with a third party, personally.

 

eff any extended warranty... there is a factory warranty on the truck.

 

10% of something is better than 0% of nothing. Also, even if the dealer knew of issues with the truck..The labor isn't coming out of their pocket.

 

That doesn't always apply to business, even if it makes sense.

I don't operate mine that under those principles.

Just bought a 14 with 32000m from a dealer
Called toyo to check on warranty said still had remainder of factory warrenty.
The dealer tried to sell me a warranty he implied was at toyo for anothey 100,000 m.
When I checked on warranty it was some independent company not Toyo.
It was the finance guy trying to scam me.
Might get extended toyo but not throught them.
What an A$$!!!!

 

I wouldn't purchase the warranty either save your money

 

My Dealer tried to push an Allstate Extended Warranty on me, I pushed back for them to sell me a Toyota Warranty, she blew a layer of dust off the Forms for the Toyota one and told me its been forever since they sold one, lol.

...^^^... I was also refused a Toyota OEM Extended Warranty when I bought a new Tacoma a few years back.

Dealer sold me a "SET Regional Warranty" which I promptly read and took back 2 days later for a full refund.

If I buy a warranty now ... ALWAYS buy the Toyota OEM Warranty only .... just my 2 cents.

"prepaid maintenance warranty" sounds like a rip off. Read the docs careful or post here so we can read through it. NEVER purchase a 3rd party warranty! (ever watch the show American Greed) or other ripp-off reports? There are so many specifics in which repairs are covered they are rendered useless.

 

I think he is buying a service agreement where he is prepaying for the scheduled maintenance. As that is what they call a "prepaid Maintenance warranty".

They are NOT the same thing. Tread lightly.

Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle requirements:

Certified Vehicle plans are available for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles from time of certified vehicle purchase or lease, whichever comes first.

All Other Used non-certified vehicles:

________ Plan for a used vehicle is only available in the dealership at the time you purchase or lease your used vehicle.

 

I think you guys might be right that he is looking at some maintenance warranty, those never seem like a good idea

...^^^... My friend had a "prepaid maintenance agreement" with Honda.

When she traded the car at that same dealership, she lost the rest of the prepaid maintenance warranty ... period.

They said no refund and no transfer at that point.

 

When my wife bought her FJ, she also called our insurance company Geico and got a 100k miles bumper to bumper warranty for $12/month. Lucky since the FJ has a tranny design flaw and failed at 70k. The replacement cost was 6k and was paid by Geico.

 

I'm on my forth Tacoma, never bought one, never needed one. The most expensive thing I ever replaced was a starter on a 16 yr tacoma.

 

If you've already made the decision to get an extended warranty, the Toyota Platinum warranty/service agreement through Toyota Financial Services can't be beat (for the owner, anyway).

You can purchase it, even on a used Toyota, at any time up until 3 years or 36,000 miles since the vehicle was placed in service. It actually has a cash value - if you change your mind, you can cancel the policy and get a pro-rated refund back. It is also transferable to a new owner if you wish to sell your vehicle before the warranty expires. This is great if you sell it to a private party, because you can offer the vehicle as coming with a warranty, which certainly helps sell the vehicle when you're dealing with a private party.

You DO NOT have to buy the warranty from the dealer that sells you the vehicle. This means you can comparison shop around all the Toyota vehicles around your town for the best deal.

I am pretty sure the reason some dealers don't sell, or are reluctant to sell the Toyota warranty through Toyota Financial Services is that there is a higher profit margin on the 3rd party warranties.
