I took my truck to the local dealer to have my winter tires put on. I gets phone call from the service advisor saying "the TPMS didn't break, but it failed and we are willing to split the cost of it with you"

Do they fail often? Seems odd that it was fine when it went in and now all of a sudden it failed... I can't help but feel like they are trying to pull one over on me.

Did you have the dealer put winter tires on rims, or just have the winter tires & rim mounted on the hub?

If they're willing to split the cost with you off the bat, they broke it.

That is code for they broke it and want to pass the cost of the part to you. Pretty much the same as your cell mate offering complementary lube.

Ask them to show you what failed and how they came to that conclusion.

If it worked when you drove into service... They should return it in the same working condition. Like Dan said, have them show you exactly what’s going on.

I would politely explain that your truck is a 2016 with x amount of miles on it and has never had a problem with the TPMS up to and including the day you brought it in for the tire swap. If they try to weasel there way out talk to the service manager, then up the food chain untill it gets taken care of. It's on them and that's what they have insurance for.

If it failed out of warranty, they would make you pay for it.
If it failed under warranty, they would make Toyota pay for it.

In other words, they broke it and they don't want to have to pay for it. They will "split the cost" and claim it to Toyota as warranty.

Yep, they broke them. The "duck" that they use to push the bead of the tire onto the rim 100% breaks the sensors if the person putting on the tire doesnt pay attention.
