Dealer Scuffed Wheels, Paint Code or Color for 2020 TRD Pro wheels?

Took the 2020 AG Pro in for it's very first dealer check up this week, rotation and inspection (not enough miles on it for an oil change).

The 'tech' let his air sockets spin inside the wheels like he's in NASCAR and scuffed a bunch of the paint.

Dealer (again, as expected) says that is 'normal' and can't be helped when wheels are removed. Ahh, the modern "Who cares" attitude of customer service and mechanic work these days... so nice.

We all know that's total BS and it's easy to take lugs off and on while not letting the socket rattle in the wheel.

He also knocked the mini plastic trim rings off the center caps and tried to toss them out but with those I forced them to find in his trash can and snap back on.

So I'll do touchups inside the holes myself. Dealer body shop has no idea what color it is. (Are we sensing a pattern here?)

Just need the paint code or Toyota color to ask for so I can get a satin black close enough. THANKS!

You should have made the dealer fix it. They most certainly will.

The first time I ran into this, the dealer ordered me new wheels when a tech damaged mine during a rotation.
The second time I ran into this was at my local DT when a tech did the same to my SCS wheels during a rotation. They were not happy about ordering replacements from SCS but they did it.

My dealer has not damaged my wheels. I've definitely had dedicated tire shops do it though.

I touched up my wheels, albeit entirely different wheels than what you have. I eyeballed paint and in my case the paint on the wheels was most similar to Silver Sky Metallic and the touch-up was not noticeable.

Next time you go there, zip tie 10 lbs hammers to your shoes and break all the floor tiles... "sorry, its normal that everything breaks when I walk"

If being lazy and careless with those wheels couldn't you leave the center caps on when removing the wheel?

100% would not accept that response. My last car had glossy black painted wheels and I had it for nearly 6 years and never had a single scratch from a socket and I expect the same for my Tacoma. It might be normal for someone who doesn't care or doesn't know what they are doing but that doesn't mean its acceptable. I would hate to see what a wheel looks from them let if you let them mount some tires.

That is 100% normal if you don't care about the quality of your work. Had a similar incident with my wife's Acrua. Tech went Nascar style and put several chips in the wheel. I pointed it out to the shop manager who at first denied, but when I pulled out he paperwork showing they rotated the tires, and the vehicle had only been serviced by the dealer and the marks were on all 4 wheels he started to listen. He took me up on my suggestion to watch his boys work and sure enough the tech did the same thing on another car. They paid to have them repaired at a place that specializes in wheels. Not sure I would trust a body shop. They ended up looking perfect.

Under your performance contract with Toyota ie “the warranty” the dealer is obligated to put forth their best skill and effort in furthering the interests of the owners of that contract as they are the only authorized agents to perform the work on Toyota’s behalf. By not providing workers skilled in the tasks assigned to them you got a slam dunk case on a new set of wheels as it would be cheaper to replace than to repair. Reduce your request to writing by sending a certified letter to the dealer the threat of civil action will be enough to make you whole again as the cost to defend their action will more than the wheels themselves.

    Right?

Due to Covid, no customers are allowed inside the building. Not sure how they sell new cars that way, but no one is allowed in for service under any circumstances.

You drop your keys in a slot at appointment time and they let you know when it's done.

Just trying to get them to come outside from behind the window and look at the 'work' his guy did was a challenge.

My only guess for those coming off is he just dropped each wheel or kicked it off the studs and let them hit the floor as he did it.

I saw the schmuck that parked it, looked like he hadn't had a bath in weeks.

About what you expect from the guy that can't get any job but O/Cs and rotations at a car shop.

No protective seat cover used, no paper floor mat used. Nothing. Just drive it over to the lube side and have at it with the impact gun.

I wouldn't judge him based on that... I haven't bathed in years. I'm more of a shower guy, myself. :cookiemonster:

As far as the wheel goes, depending on how bad it is (post pics), I'd (try to) make the dealer replace the wheel or repair it themselves. Then I'd be sure not to bring it back there, and be clear with any future techs, that you're going to hold them accountable, so be careful.

Like a lot of others have mentioned, that is definetily not acceptable. Normal to scratch your brand new wheels when rotating? No fucking way!

I guess a lot of people just believe when dealers say that its normal, but this is far from normal. With my ocd i would demand new wheels or get those fuckers to fix the damaged ones. Lets see the pics of the damage.

    Good luck man!

    Shit man, that sucks.

That is why i avoid dealers at all costs, unless its warranty work. Much better to go to your favourite local mechanic.

I mean there are some good/honest dealers out there, but good luck finding one.

You just spent a sizable sum on a brand new truck. Not even enough miles yet for the first oil change, and they f'ed your wheels up. Then say it's normal. Bullshit, out 'em. Get on the horn to the Mothership, and don't let up until you get satisfaction. They don't take this shit lightly, the SM will be contacted.

Another reason to do your own rotations. I started when they used a wrong and lazy rotation pattern on my Subarus. Then again, I stopped buying expensive wheels years ago when I realized that wheels are a wear item and stuff always seemed to happen to them . I realize those come stock however.

No updates. Doesn't seem like anyone knows what color the off-black is so I'll have to experiment on some things until I find a close match and then airbrush it into the holes.

I sent the General Manager an email about the experience and how I bought yet another new truck from them, paid in full on the spot, no haggling, traded in a gorgeous FJ with low miles that took them days to resell at a huge profit, and I bought the 10 yr extended warranty which is a good money maker for them.

Reminded him my GF wants a new car and loves the 4Runner Pro sitting there and my mom across town would like to replace her Sorento with a RAV4 Adventure and also reminded him that there is another Toyota dealer that would love to sell two new cars right now and get two low mileage trades just 25 miles away.

Maybe they want me to keep buying new stuff from them like I do or maybe not.

If they care they'll make it right and if not I won't have to spend any money there again. Simple I guess.

Sucks that we can't depend on 'techs' to do one of the most simple jobs correctly doesn't it? Makes you wonder how it would go if it ever needs real serious work.

I wouldn't give the fuckers the courtesy of a phone call. Get in contact with CORPORATE, with photos. This dealer is bending you over, and will continue until you stand up!

Did you speak to the service manager or the service advisor? Ive worked in dealerships since 2004 but ive had to yank my share of service managers through a knot hole over my personal vehicles.
