Ah- big Gov’t stuff... drones are noisey too, I’d be mad about that, too. I used to work for a county agency in college on a contract to look at aerial photos for what was in people’s back yards - they were interested in identifying possible tax cheats by looking at the contents of registered church lots- pools and RV’s were flagged as potential residences.

Anyways, hope OP got a good price for his truck!

Inside someone's vehicle is not a public area, there's also precedent set about "reasonable expectation of privacy" and inside a vehicle meets that qualification.

I don't make the law nor even agree with it just stating what it is:

    (13) (A) A video event recorder with the capability of monitoring driver performance to improve driver safety, which may be mounted in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver, in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, or in a five-inch square mounted to the center uppermost portion of the interior of the windshield. As used in this section, “video event recorder” means a video recorder that continuously records in a digital loop, recording audio, video, and G-force levels, but saves video only when triggered by an unusual motion or crash or when operated by the driver to monitor driver performance.

    (B) A vehicle equipped with a video event recorder shall have a notice posted in a visible location which states that a passenger’s conversation may be recorded.

    (C) Video event recorders shall store no more than 30 seconds before and after a triggering event.

oh you're that sovereign citizen guy that thinks MSO's are some super secret ownership certificate that consumers can never get their hands on lol.

Anyways the CA constitution has nothing to do with this... its the penal code that applies to this specific situation and since as you know the state has a monopoly on the legitimate use of force you better obey citizen!!!

Jk... like I told op I don't think anyone gives a shit but if he caught the attention of the wrong prosecutor for some reason then yes he could very well be charged with wiretapping... gotta love selective enforcement :)

Heads up your ignorance of the law isn't a valid excuse to break it ;)

I don't agree with it and think it would never be used agaisn't something as innocent as OPs post but it is what it is:

    CVC 26708(b)(13)
    (13) (A) A video event recorder with the capability of monitoring driver performance to improve driver safety, which may be mounted in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver, in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, or in a five-inch square mounted to the center uppermost portion of the interior of the windshield. On two of those videos I wonder if they actually didn't see you which is why they pulled out, or if they simply didn't care and expected you to stop for them. Either way, they are both jackasses.

You again lol...tell me everything and show me nothing. Let you in on a little secret that everyone else already knows...the CA penal code only exists because of the CA constitution. Probably should take the time to read it!

    AM I BEING DETAINED?!

No point in arguing with a perpetual self victimizing sovereign citizen who believes laws don't apply because the united states is actually just a corporation that you didn't consent to

You never got a real education, read some blogs online with fancy words you don't understand, and now you think you're an expert in constitutional law.

So do you still think MSO's are some super secret document that owners can never have??? And we don't actual own anything right?? LOL

Wrong. He's in a public space ( roadways ) which is completely legal to photograph anyone and anything which is why celebrities get pissed off at the paparazzi. Also, the dealer is in OPs private vehicle which, by law, is his property. When the dealer agreed to test drive the truck, that cover's your two-party consent worries.

LOL contradict yourself from one sentence to the other... "he's in a PUBLIC space!.... dealer is in OPs PRIVATE vehicle"

Yes public roads are public, and private vehicles are private.

If what you say is true then BY LAW we wouldn't be required to post a notice in our vehicles would we?? Yet here we are....

(B) A vehicle equipped with a video event recorder shall have a notice posted in a visible location which states that a passenger’s conversation may be recorded.

    (C) Video event recorders shall store no more than 30 seconds before and after a triggering event.

Of course no one ever does and the likelihood of being charged for this is minuscule... but the law is the law, and you're a cop!?? How do you not know that??

The courts have repeatedly found that you have no expectation of privacy in a public place or speaking to a police officer. It simply doesn't equate to a private recording inside of a private vehicle.

OP: What's Lompoc like? Looks like a beautiful little city.

A typical So/Central CA coastal city. Population ~70K. I have been here since 1983, but will retire in a couple of years and plan on leaving CA for other less progressive locales.

There are exceptions to the law which have been worked out in case trials since the law was initially passed that support my statement and no, I'm making an effort to dig them up. If you want to hyper critical, then all the power to you.

If I wanted a lesson in law I would have gone to school for that.

    Good God people...
Just watch the video and enjoy!

TW is turning into a bunch of bitches bickering the facts of a "law" that will never be enforced.

A lot of armchair lawyers in here.

If anyone wants to go after a shit ton of people, check out the billions of videos of people on YouTube recording people in their businesses, houses and automobiles that are “breaking” the law without posting a sign saying they’re doing so.

I don't know what is sillier, Me wasting 5 minutes watching that pointless video or someone trading in a 20 year old truck. There is no way you got what that was worth vs a private sale.

Was there any mention in the original post that I was dissatisfied about the trade in? It paid for the taxes, license, doc fees plus some. I wrote a check and drove away without a lien holder or monthly payment, couldn't be happier. At my age, it's not worth my time and effort it would take to privately sell it for a few bucks more.

The silliest thing was your dealer vs private sale statement, Captain Obvious.

What do you consider your time is worth in dollars?
When I looked at all the factors involved in a private sell vs trade, for me it is not worth the hassle, the time spent, and the little money difference that might be gained in a private sell.

I am in agreement with the OP. If he is happy with the trade and the price of the new vehicle that is all that matters. For years I have traded a vehicle in and wrote a check for the new vehicle. I hate vehicle payments. When you make payments, it really is not your vehicle until it is paid off. it is the lenders vehicle.
