Everyone has a story about how they know a guy who's brother's, cousin's, best friend from high school's, brother in law had a Mustang that "blew up on a Fram filter".

But more often than not it's just urban legend passed down from person to person. The Internet has only made it worse.

That said....The Fram Ultra/GX is just about to best filter you can buy. Hang out on the Bobistheoilguy site and you'll discover the facts.

As for mixing oils? Not the end of the world. Oils are compatible with each other. My lawn mower and FIL's Dakota have lived very long lives on "Frankenbrews" has they're known.

The dealership wasn't deliberately trying to deceive you. They were just trying to fulfill your request.

We use the correct viscosity oil, if the vehicle takes 8 quarts of 5w20 and we run out of cheap synthetic blend pennzoil after 5 quarts that the customer has a coupon for then we use 3 quarts of bulk motorcraft synthetic oil. I mix oils in my personal vehicles all the time, always full synthetic I mix brands and viscosity, last oil change there was pennzoil, mobil1, costco oil, royal purple. You are not going to be denied warranty because you didn't use Toyota oil, if you use canola oil yeah your gonna have warranty issues but as long as you use halfway decent oil it won't matter. I've never done warranty work where we asked for proof of oil brand, sure if there's proof you never changed the oil once and need a new engine at 50000 miles then yeah it'll be denied, proof could be factory oil filter still installed or oil being sludge like.

As for oil filters I use napa pro select, I can buy them at shop rate of around $1.50-$2.00 each, if memory serves they are either wixx or mahm filters rebranded.

Better to do that than get a visit from the ATF. Heck they even investigated a guy who bought a bunch of diesel oil filters so he could compare their performance in a diesel. To the ATF you are usually guilty until proven innocent.

As long as you are not mixing different weight of oil . This will do no harm to the engine . It was pretty shady of the sales guy to not even tell you about the different brands . Was he going to charge you the same amount ? I’m pretty picky so this would be a no go for me to mix different brand oils .

Yep, & here's mine Bill, (mornin' btw :D)

Been changing oil since the early 70's. In that time I've had exactly two (2) oil filter failures. One on an '81 Firebird Formula, and the other on a late 90's Ranger. Anyone care to venture a guess on the brand?

Fram filters are good for at least one thing, they'll teach the installer to carefully inspect the gasket and the crimp that's supposed to retain it before going forward....:annoyed: :notsure:

Mornin' Chuck. Always a good practice to inspect the filter before installation.....I even shake mine to listen for anything that might be lose....like an anti drain back valve or whatnot. Also, smart to open the box and make sure the correct filter is in there.

And if your shopping at Walmart it's prudent to open the box and make sure that the filter hasn't been used and returned.

In my years I've only had one filter issue. Had a Mobil1 with a defective ADBV.

When I worked at a dealership they bought in bulk standard mobile for basic oil changes 5w20, 5w30 molbil1 5w30 and a bulk super delvac, most of the rest was either qts. Or 5 gal bulk boxes, Depending on rate of use. if someone wanted a specific brand it was ordered from a parts store because they mostly stocked qts of the bulk brand and Mopar oil, along with the new Pennzoil at that time recommend for wildcat Hemi motor. the only time he didn't get what he was asking for if he was throwing a fit because his oil change was taking to ''long'' and we were waiting for the requested brand of oil even though he was told up front it had to be ordered and delivered so expect a longer wait. At that point we tossed the bulk in and called it x brand just to get him out. After all he was the only person who mattered. We had a up front policy of an front expected time. We could put out an oil change In 18 minutes or less on most cars with some exceptions

Just order all your stuff from Amsoil. Oil, filter, air filter, grease, fuel additives etc.
    Just my opinion

Good advise Bill, in the slightest bit of a rush it's too easy to overlook the small details!

"Frankenbrews"; love it! :) I have done this many times too when I have a slew of half empty bottles sitting around. As long as they are all the same weight and meet manufacturer's specs (which they all do), then it won't hurt a thing. I find it funny how some people think that the manufacturer's stuff is all that will work for their vehicle. BMW makes a fortune convincing their customers that this is true!

So what? 0W20 and properly rated is what is important, not brand.

Same here, I end up with a few partial jugs sometimes, due to many application's calling for 4.sumthin'. I'll combine them when compatible... for the rare occasion when something needs topped off.

As many have already said, as long as the oil meets the spec for the application, it won't make a difference. Other than additive packages there will be little difference. As someone who has been changing my own oil for 35+ years, I've never understood the oil fanbois. I just get what the manufacturer recommends as far as viscosity, etc. and get on with it. Same with filters really, although I have learned to visually inspect the inside of the filter before buying as I have seen some with visible rust.

I don't worry about Fram filters as that's all that's been used on my 96 Tacoma 2.7 for 415,000 trouble-free miles. It's never had an engine cover off, that's right never even had the valve cover removed.
It's also the only filter I've ever used on my 34 year old Wheel Horse Tractor with god knows how many hours.

I owned/operated a chain of auto parts store for 16 years and sold Fram (probably several million over 16 years), Wix and AC filters to DIYer's, repair shops, quick changes, car dealers, fleets and had VERY FEW issues with any of the three brands. Fram the least of all three.

But the INTERNET says they are junk, correct? We all know if the internet states it, then it must be true.........................
