Dealers just need to use a product that meets Toyota corporate standards. You would be very surprised to know what some of them use.

It gets even worse with things like gear and transmission oil, most of them don't even stock the 75-85 gl5 oil the manual says to use in these trucks differentials.

I use whatever oil is on sale at Costco. Lol doesn't matter really. Just change it out on time and you'll be fine.

One more funny tidbit about the Pennzoil thing: if you look up the "oil selector" on the Pennzoil site, there are no entries for Tacomas - Camrys, 4Runners, etc., but no Taco!

Agreed. What ever is the cheapest brand name that day from WalMart and gasp Fram filters. Now through 4 Toyota trucks in probably 3 million+ thousand mile, zero issues. The newest (2011 only has about 150K) because I'm no longer driving 100 miles a day!

Don't get me wrong, I do have my favorites and obsess about oil just as much as the next TW forumite. I personally believe full syn HM Valvoline is refined from virgin tears and noticed OEM Toyota filters give me a half chub.

At the end of the day, I realize I'm being impractical and most oils are made by Warren anyways, so I just "settle" for just using whatever reputable oil brand is on sale, just like you suggested. Still won't touch a Fram filter tho lol

I usually get 1 quart of all different brands and mix them. That way I get the best of all the worlds.

Annually. Which is probably overkill, but I've had one clunkers in my day, so better safe than sorry. Plus I enjoy doing it.

Ironically though, Pennzoil beat out all the other brands in oil performance (ultra plat, and didn't mention amsoil that took 1st since its too damn expensive) so I wouldn't worry about it. Changing mine to Pennzoil platinum high mileage today actually

It's hard to go wrong with just about any modern oil....conventional or synthetic.

I've been using Valvoline Maxlife synthetic 5w or 10w30 for a couple of years now.
