There was actually a tsb about using 5w-20 in the v6. Came right from Toyota.

What TSB number? Do you have a link to the TSB text?

the GR engine is listed as one that can use the 5W-20. We have the the 1GRFE. I ran 5w-20 once with a Mobil 1 filter. Gas mileage was perhaps 1-2 MPG better and I also noticed the tick inthe engine seemed to be less noisey versus the 5w-30.

    NOTE:
The recommended viscosity grade for this oil differs according to vehicle model.
Use the recommended grade specified on the oil filler cap or in the Repair Manual

or Owner’s Manual for each vehicle.

the above says to put whatever is written on the oil cap. according to a dealer i called, they said the only vehicle with 4.0 that gets the 5w-20 is the latest FJs.

If I read that TSB correctly, the 5W-20 is ok to run in the GR motor. Hmmm... most interesting. I have an oil change coming up next month probably. I'll have to do some digging and calling around.

I'm not trying to start an argument - but this TSB is dated March 29, 2006. Unless there has been another TSB that superceeds this one, I would have to say that the dealer was incorrect in that statement. I see where the TSB does state to go by the owner's manual and/or oil cap - but my question is WTF Toyota? Why are there so many differing "factory" answers? The TSB should be the latest and highest word - but it refers back to the out dated owner's manual. The TSB clearly states it includes the GR series motors. The TSB also says

    ILSAC GF–4 SAE 5W–20
This oil has been set as the Toyota genuine engine oil, starting in February 2006 for the U.S. This oil is superior in terms of fuel economy, engine protection, and cold starting performance.

There are a lot of differing opinions - and most of them start with Toyota.

Like I said above, I would be much more agreeable to trying a 20 weight oil IFF I had an oil pressure gauge. Without that I'd need more data from someone with one, or from Toyota, as they seem to contradict themselves, even within the TSB.

Why the concern with oil pressure? It will be lower with a thinner oil but the pressure has little to nothing to do with the amount of oil flow or lubrication... its only REAL function would be to indicate an oil leak.

If it's oil pressure ya want put 50 wt in it. I agree...lubrication is all about flow, not pressure.

BUT...are you certain the pressure would be lower with 20wt? If the oil pump has the capacity it will put out the volume and the pressure will be pretty much the same won't it? I am assuming a relatively new engine.

Pressure will be more determined by the clearances between the bearing components and the bypass setting. Which is why what's most important is the pressure differential as the engine ages and bearing wear progresses.

With the info from this thread and the dealer, I've decided to switch to 5w20 (Mobil 1) in this truck. My only question is: why not 0w20. According to what I learned in the Dr. Haas article, it should flow the same at operating temp as 5w20. This is a Land Surveying Crew truck. It has been running +- 800 mi. / week lately and a 1-2 mpg increase would be nice.

You cant judge a weight of oils viscosity based on weight alone... they vary wildly in both operating and start up viscosities even inside the same brand with different formuations. I think Mobil 1 5-20 is as far as Id like to push it. I will do this oil at my next change because loosing 1-2 mpg going to 5-30 Mobil 1 just sucks.

When 0w20 first came out, it was designed to use in Honda and Ford engines that called for 5w20. I don't see why you couldn't use it in your truck. It will flow faster at start up, but other than that, it shouldn't make any difference.

I found 5w-20 with a Mobil 1 oil filter really cut down on the ticking noise. I also had my best gas mileage on 5w-20. I went back 5w-30 and an OEM filter. Tick is louder for sure and MPG's dropped ~1 MPG. I am going back to 5w-20 Penzoil Platinum next time. I am going to try 5w20 with OEM filter and see how it pans out. I will stick with OEM filters until warranty is up.

Since Toyota has already approved the 0w20 for us to use (and documented it in the TSB) I am pretty sure their engineers have already done this for us and deemed it "good". Dr. Haas' guidance applies in the scenario that the mfr's engineers have not made that analysis and approved it.

I don't know why everyone is so quick to throw out Toyota's engineering when we bought the truck on the basis of how reliable and bulletproof it is in the first place: they are the same ones who engineered it!

I can understand if you are thinking you're wanting to keep the truck 'forever'. But just be reasonable about how long forever is: the engine will very easily outlast the frame even using inexpensive, e.g., Walmart blue bottle, petroleum oils changed at 5-7k intervals.

But if you're going to go the 0w20 route you'll be using high quality grp III+/IV/V synthetic oils. If you do the dumb thing and STILL change at 3-5k intervals...well...how long can you keep on beating a dead horse by shining the saddle?

    I changed the oil in my new Tacoma at 1297 miles...used 5W-30 Mobile-1 and a YZZD3 filter.

I'll do it again at 3K miles and again at 5K miles. After that...I'll do it every 3-5K miles.

Call it overkill...anal...OCD...whatever. It makes me happy.

    Looking!

Wow! That is really informative. Great way to spend a Sunday morning. I knew they were good, but now I know why using 0-20 and 0-30 oils is better for my cars.

Ok buddy... Can you do three things for me? 1st) Take your meds. 2nd) Hit that Caps key again to turn that pesky little light off (the one that you think is the "record' light for the FBI camera in your keyboard) and 3rd) delete you account here and never return.

    Thanks.
