I have a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport, completely stock. I plan to add either BFG AT KO's, Goodyear DuraTrac's or Hankook Dynapro ATM's. I am also considering going up a size to the P265 70 R17, assuming they come in P-rated tires since I mainly commute.

I contacted one store and was told that they will only install the stock-sized tire and will not go up a size. Is this normal? If the +1 option fits, why would this be an issue? And how would so many have tires installed with lifts (I am obviously new to this). Another stores website says

"When ordering tires by size, the replacement tire(s) you select must meet or exceed the vehicle requirements as outlined by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). "

    Thoughts?

    This.

First time I replaced tires on my 2003, Discount Tire was all like "if you go up a size to 265/75R16, it'll save you $25 a tire..."

So, this is not a normal response then? I do not have a Discount Tire near me but I will assume this is an outlier. Has anyone had issues with Costco or Sam's Club (I have not called them yet but they seem to have a good warranty).

Costco & Walmart will not upsize so I would assume sam's club doesn't either. Too bad you don't have a discount tire near you, they upsize no problems. They even have in their database which tires will rub.

That is weird, the Toyota dealer near me actually has a few new Tacoma & Tundra's they have put levels, and lifts on and added larger and more aggressive tires than stock.

I've not had trouble with Walmart going up in tire size. What I have experienced at a number of shops was an unwillingness to install a tire on a rim that was either too wide or too narrow for the tire.

Find a better shop, I've never had a place refuse oversized tires but you hear it often online. I've done it at a toyota dealer and other shops and no one has ever said a thing.

discount / americas tire has never given me any issue and has always had the best price.

If the places around you are really giving you issues. Simply have a buddy help you out and bring just the rims in.

Might have something to do with where you live or what kind of store you are asking. I've never had any problem, but I buy my tires from independent stores that give just as good of prices as the "discount" stores but have guys who actually know what they are doing. Go somewhere that sells truck tires regularly. Some inner city shop that mostly does cars and minivans might have that policy to make things easier on them.

Not sure why people keep spreading this BS. The previous dealer I work for and the current one both have some of best tire prices around. I have a Firestone across the street and town fair tire about 400 yards down the street. We always beat their tire prices for name brand tires. Some dealers mark their stuff up crazy amounts just like some aftermarket places. But it also goes the other way. Do your due dilligence and shop around.

Just bring them the wheels. A few places around here wont change from stock size either (costco, dealer) but they will put anything on a rim because it eliminates any liability issues.

I had samsclub put my 265/75/16 bf goodrich KO2 tires on. They didn't question if it was stock size or not.

Yea, put your wheels in the back of a friends truck, go to costco and tell them you have an fj cruiser. OEM size is 265-70-17

they will do it, just tell them the fj is in the alignment shop or something

Dealer mounted p265/70/17 on my 2011 TRD Sport. No problem at all. The upgraded size fills in the wheel well nice. Truck should come from factory with this size tire

Same with Walmart. They won't even service your vehichle if you have different size tires.
