Went to my local dealer yesterday with TSB paperwork in hand ready to do war. Not necessary as the repair tech said it is a common issue and he would order the parts right away. Much different than my last visit where the guy acted like he had never heard of the problem before and they would have to test it! I guess the dealers are more apt to assist a loyal customer these days.

I just had mine done last week at the Toyota dealership here in Dublin, CA. The guy told me the same thing. He really kept emphasizing it. I'm not sure if they do that to scare people away from it. But after it was done, I hardly noticed. It's a tad stiffer and the back sits a bit higher (an inch or two). But it's not a super significant change from what it was before.

The way he was talking, it made me wonder like you. But then I thought... Dude, I bought a truck that's supposed to be a truck. If I wanted it to ride like a car, I wouldn't have bought a truck.

after watching, and having my truck done over two years ago,the question has to be asked -
will Toyota EVER give up and just put the 4 pack on ??
or, offer it as a option

Called Cornhusker Toyota in Grand Island, Nebraska and asked them if they would do the rear spring TSB on my truck as it had been bottoming out with the 300 pounds of sand I had in the bed . I was told by their service manager (Jessie) that I would have to bring the truck in to have them check it out. I set up an appointment to have this done, and while I was in the waiting room they raised my truck up on their hoist for an inspection. After that Jessie and I went for about a ten minute ride ( I let him drive ). When we returned to the dealership he explained to me that when the truck was on the hoist they could find no signs that it had ever bottomed out and that if they could not duplicate the problem they would not be able to do the work. I told him that I was sure that it had been bottoming out so after getting out of the truck we both crawled underneath to take a look. Guess what? You could easily see where the frame had been hitting the rubber bump stops and I of course readily pointed this out to Jessie. After crawling back out from underneath the truck Jessie explained to me that without exessive wear on the bump stops he could not do the rear spring TSB (I had never heard of this one before). Anyway I could easily tell that there was no arguing with this guy so I just got back into my truck and drove home. I then called Toyota customer service and told them about my experience with Cornhusker Toyota of Grand Island Nebraska. Customer service in turn called Performance Toyota of LaVista, Nebraska and they did the rear spring TSB for me. I was not asked to bring the truck in for an inspection and I was not told that they had to duplicate the problem. They just ordered the parts and did the work, you know, the way it should be. End of story!!!!

Sport City Toyota in Dallas, TX. Just took a quick look at the springs to make sure I had the 3-pack before agreeing to do the work. Had the parts in stock which totally surprised me. Had it knocked out in one day and actually did it right the first time. The service writer acted surprised when I asked for the alignment print out and said that it wasn't part of the TSB. We looked at all their paperwork and he realized he was wrong. So one little hiccup from a confused service writer but other than that I was more than impressed with the work.

Just got home from getting the TSB done at Star Toyota in League City, TX. They ordered the parts when I called to make the appointment. All they needed from me was a description to enter into the computer about why I needed new springs. Took about 3 hours once the work was started.

Earlier this week I had my TSB done at Texas Toyota of Grapevine. The guy I dealt with was Jeff Dwyer. Good guy and got me taken care of. He put in that it was "rough riding" when loaded because he said it wouldn't be approved otherwise. The guy I went to a few months ago shot me down so I'd suggest asking for Jeff specifically since he's encountered at least one TSB for sure.

They even washed the truck for me. :D

    Classic Toyota in Tyler, TX.
Zero hassle, and they did not care that I wasn't stock (5100's @ 1.75" up front and 5100's in the rear).

Even printed out the alignment spec sheet for me.

First five or ten calls resulted in dealer telling me that they had no idea of what I was talking about. Later I was told they had to test drive the truck in the open field by their dealer in order to even consider the TSB. As I live a long ways from them I finally got an agreement that they would order the parts and I could just come in for the TSB. Later I was told they would install the springs and shocks. Later I had a message that they could only do the springs.

I traveled to the dealer where I asked how much an oil change would be, I was told 54 bucks. I was amazed. I told the dude beside the ten bucks of oil, and an air and oil filter where did the other 40 bucks go. I saw a coupon for 49 bucks on another worksheet and asked how I could get that deal and was told no way, besides with taxes the coupon would end up being the same price. They also tacked on 15 bucks to rotate the tires.

After I picked up my truck I went to pay and I saw a stack of 8.99 coupons for oil change on the desk. I asked for that price and the lady said I had to have a coupon that was mailed out by the dealer. I asked to speak to someone and the service guy and someone else came over and said nothing could be done. I continued to moan and groan and the lady left and came back and said they would give me the 8.99 deal.

So far I love the stiffer ride and the raised look of the truck. However I would not go back to Wesley Chapel for any service. Those guys tried to stick it to me. I also had to spend a whole lot of time to get this done. I think my kids and I will do all of our service from now on. I am really mad that I gave them a 1500 dollar job and while they had the truck up anyway they tried to take advantage of me. Let them make their money off someone else.

Just to clarify, Toyota produces more than just the Tacoma. It is also quite possible a service advisor may not know about a specific TSB on a specific model considering there may be 10 to 40 TSBs issued for a generation of a model.

Also, If you read the the TSB regarding the harsh ride the shocks are not changed on the TRD models and '09 and '10 model years. This would explain why they didn't change your shocks. If they did you would have the same shocks that came with your vehicle.

As for testing it seems it is hit and miss and I think part of it is due to the description of the problem as stated in the TSB.

You are right about a lot of different models. However I emailed the TSB to the service rep while on the phone with him. After he read the TSB while I was on hold the rep said he still did not know what I was talking about. Also the dealership had called me at one point ( I save voice mails!) and told me they had three of four of the shocks in stock and I should come up (about 85 miles one way) just to have some guy drive around a grassy florida field in an attempt to replicate the road to my place in the mountains that has streams across the road and hairpin turns that makes backseat passengers suffer nausea.

I also think the TSB is not clear. At one point the TSB says my TRD is not covered but in another place it appears to say it is. I am glad it is over.

Bottom line it is thier job to know their products and to make the customer happy. They did neither in this case. To charge over $50.00 bucks for an oil change in addition to the $1,500.00 TSB was just a crock.
I love my truck but I have been let down by not only this dealer but other toyota dealers also. My kids and I will do the service from now on and just to be safe we will document everything so we won't get the shaft if we have to use the warranty.
