I went this week to the dealership to get my 25,000 mile thing. All these check boxes were checked. You know where they carefully go through and check everything. One of the check boxes included the cabin air filter. The cabin air filter checked out okie dokie. Anyway guys, with winter approaching you might want to check your cabin air filter.PXL_20231116_205310483.jpg

It's winter time. We don't want that cold air getting into our trucks!!

They shouldn't have checked it as ok.
But I can see why they don't want to check it.

    1. People keep a lot stuff in their glove box
    2. Some people don't know where the filter is, and then accuse the tech of going through their truck and belongings. You never want to be accused of stealing stuff.
    3. Most people decline the filter change anyways.

I always tell them NOT to check my cabin filter. Mostly out of resect to them.
I'm not paying them to replace it for me. And I don't want them having to empty my glove box.
It's a waste of their time checking it for me. I just tell them to skip it and save their time inspecting something else.

I usually throw them in with an order from RockAuto. I get the Wix filters. I buy 2 or 3 at a time.

I have told the story before on this forum and other forums, but I always write the date when I put in filters.

I was at a dealership who shall remain nameless, and the service advisor found me in the waiting area and came up with a cabin air filter that had bugs, dirt, and leaves and shit in it.

Now, first of all, I know that this was the wrong air filter because it was the wrong size for the 4Runner that was currently being serviced, but upon closer inspection, there was also no writing on it to signify this was my filter.

I told the service advisor very politely that there is no way that is my filter because I write on my filters, and also, that is the wrong filter size.

The guy sort of panicked for a bit, but being a master bullshitter, he said that he had me confused with another customer and would I like to change my cabin air filter?

I wish my 99 had a cabin air filter. All that crap gets sucked straight into the condenser and such. Might try to build one into the air inlet someday.

I change my own cabin and engine filters and also write the mileage and date right on it with a fine point red ink sharpie. I do this mainly for my own reference. One day it provided an added bonus when I was at a dealer getting the oil changed and they advised the engine filter and cabin filter were both dirty and required replacement. I smiled and politely declined. The service advisor asked me (kinda smarmy) "what's funny"? I calmly replied that they were both replaced, by me, no more than 5,000 miles ago with OEM filters and I wrote mileage and date right on them. Obviously they never opened either cover or they would have seen the info and the good condition of both.

    Busted :pccoffee:

(PS: I checked them both when I got home just for grins: No Trouble Found)

They missed an opportunity to take you for another $100. I bet if you complained, that guy would get fired.

Because I’m pretty sure they are under new ownership and management and I probably shouldn’t be blaming them for something that happened back in 2015.

This makes me want to check my filters. Went in for my 3rd service, told the service advisor I spent the last couple hundred miles in the dirt and had some salt flat fun. Report came back that both my cabin and air filters were still good. I'm at 17k on my '23. I've done my oil on my own time, wasn't really waiting to 15k to do the first change.

They just get paid to look at it... you got what you paid for (willing to bet they never even opened the glove box.) Good thing they didn't replace it... would have charged you $80 for a $12 filter.

At my job we call that a dome light inspection. All the operators ever do is turn on the dome light check that they inspected their machines and go back to work. I did change my cabin air filter at 6k km because I was in bc for 3 weeks in the middle of all the fires and parked under pine trees the whole time. Full of shit
