At the dealership I go to the cabin filter is in the 20K service. At 15K, I used the 20K Toyota Care service since I was quickly approaching my 2-year mark. I changed the cabin air filter myself before the service as I anticipated they would try to sell me that service. I saw the tech pull it out and check it. When I met with the service advisor, he mentioned that they checked and changed the cabin air filter. I got a little annoyed and said I had just changed it. I let it go and when I went outside and got in my truck, there was a brand new Toyota cabin air filter (YZZ one) in the box sitting on my front passenger seat for me. Man, I felt bad. whoops.

I'd feel bad too after seeing what they charged for the filter.

And I guess I wasn't too clear. I wasn't charged for it, but the tech checked mine, saw it was clean and just left the one he was supposed to install in the truck for me. The advisor had no idea what the tech did, so maybe i shouldn't have felt bad.

If y’all are freaking out over a 30$ piece of paper, it makes me wonder how you'll react when your vehicle needs some actual work

I had a company box truck with the horrible Ford 6.0 Diesel,, and I was told to only take it to XYZ Ford for service, and do what they say.
Well I had it serviced by them only, and did everything they suggested. One day (well many many many days) this truck's engine shit the bed and had me stranded. So I have it towed in to XYZ Ford. Next Monday comes and the VP of my company calls with the service manager on the line as well. VP is pressing me about the service,,, as it seems the air filter was extremely dirty, clogged and failed,,,, wiping out the turbo and causing lots of other damage, that SW went on and on about. I informed this dynamic duo as to my instructions, and that they should pull the paperwork of the service that was performed maybe 2 weeks before this failure. On the back sheet, was a log of the 123456789 point inspection,, one of which items was the engine air filter. Service manager went silent, and VP said "we'll talk later" click. The repair took weeks and was thousands,,, I want to say $4-6k range, of course all on the illustrious XYZ Ford dealer's dime.

    Work in progress...
I decided to check mine today. I found some Chick-fil-A packets in the process! Couple pokes from a Phillips screwdriver and I figure that filter is good to go.

My 23 DCSB OR was filthy at 10,000 miles. I assume it's because the recirculation wasn't on. The dealer said It was from running the AC but I run with my windows down 95% of the time.

Yeah we don't get paid for the inspection, if you need a tuneup is on that list, I'm not putting a spark plug to check, its mileage based. I check engine filter, wiper blades, tires, brakes, and lights which in total takes about 2 minutes. Cabin filters can take 5-10 minutes depending on vehicle and how much crap we have to move. Had a customer with a SUV throw a fit and got called up to the service drive once cause after putting the spare tire and tools back(which I don't get paid for) I didn't put the cardboard box back in the right place.
Yes I've heard about dealers where the techs are paid for the vehicle inspection but its never the person your talking to, its their friends brother or old coworkers former dealership.

I had a lady yell at me because I "did something to her info screen" after changing her oil. I scrolled through the options to reset the service reminder and didn't put it back on the stereo or trip A or whatever.. I tried to show her how you can use the steering wheel buttons to scroll, she wasn't having it. "Just put it back how it was!"

OK, jeez.. maybe don't buy a Cadillac with buttons on the steering wheel then if you can't handle the "hi tech" involved with it..

Cabin filters are a litmus test of a customer attitude. It's less about the filter and more about how you react to the price or the mere suggestion of it.
