I have a 2010 Off Road with 70,000 miles. I've had the oil changed at the dealership every 5,000 miles and they use regular oil. Today they put in synthetic oil and charged me $62 for an oil change and tire rotation. I didn't notice it until I got home.

Will this oil hurt it since I've had regular oil in it since new?

Should I just drive it for the 10,000 miles they put on my sticker and go back to regular oil?

    Ugh:confused:

Here is the Tech Tip that talks about the kind of oil your truck takes. If you want to push the issue print this off and take your truck back to them. Show them the Tech Tip and talk to them about the problem. I doubt if it will hurt at all. So I would say it is your choice.

I definitely would not run any oil for 10k miles. I tried it in my 2011 Tacoma with synthetic AMSOIL. AMSOIL claims some ridiculous mileage like over 20k. I drained the AMSOIL at 10k at it was JET BLACK and super thin.

I can't speak to the viscosity of the drained oil as I didn't have it tested but it did not leave me feeling very good.

I have since switched to Mobil One synthetic and will be switching over to that in my new Baja probably around 1500 miles.

It is perfectly ok from my understanding to go from conventional to synthetic but once you go synthetic you can never go back to conventional. The gaskets in your engine get lubed with the synthetic and if you switch back to conventional it will dry and crack your gaskets over time and you will get oil leaks and have to replace the gaskets. After a full engine gasket replacement I believe you could go back to conventional at that point.

I would go back to the dealer and raise 9 kinds of hell and get something out of it.

You should never take your truck to have the dealer change the oil anyway. I certainly refuse the free oil changes that come with a new truck purchase. I don't want some joe blow who could give a rats ass about my truck touching it unless I am forced to for a warranty issue.

If you didn't request synthetic I'd at least ask for a refund on the difference in price above dino. The work order should have what was requested on it. In the end they might just give you a coupon or two for a free oil change.

Take it back and have them redo it and insist on a full refund for this oil change and insist on a free oil change (or two) on a future visit. WHy?....

You can't be certain of the weight of oil installed; it should be the weight mandated in your owners manual. The mistake of 'selling' you syn likely means they installed the wrong weight; I doubt that the dealer has 5/30 synthetic as it's not called for in other toyota vehicles. Which means they put in (likely) 0/20. Not good.
Don't drive too long, and whatever you do don't just trust they happen to have a few jugs of 5/30 syn. No a few days won't affect the switch back to conventional.

Time to raise a little H3LL with this dealer....

My understanding is that you can freely switch between dino/conventional as long you follow the recommended change intervals. How could going back to Dino dry out the seals when they'll be wet constantly from new oil flowing?

You can't be serious? Do you adhear to warning labels on pillows too? It's synthetic oil, it's 100% perfectly fine to run no matter if it's 5/30 or 0/20 or anything else for that matter.

Switching from conventional to synthetic and vice versa will not damage your engine. Don't listen to those silly propaganda. That's like telling you to change your oil every 3,000 miles or your engine will be destroyed if you wait too long.

As stated above what weight oil was it?

If it was 5W-30 I wouldn't worry although just because the work order said it doesn't mean that is what they actually put in your engine.

The only time I took a car of mine to a shop was when I was 16 and hit a curb in a snow storm in my Saab 900 Turbo 5 Speed and bent the lower control arm. After that I changed my oil and refilled it through the dipstick tube :frusty:

A year later I was finalist in the area auto skills competition. It pays to open a book and pay attention when people with knowledge are speaking.

Other than having to drop my wheels off for a mount and balance since I don't have the contacts anymore to use their equipment the only other time anyone else has touched my vehicles is for a wheel alignment since I don't an alignment machine in my garage.

I could have written a long winded paragraph with citations of why the statement was wrong, but Google is quite happy to provide the facts to my objection.

Keep your objections to yourself if you expect me to take the time to research a response that simply says "No".

And besides, I've already researched it more detail than you could imagine - BOY.

No reason to respond to such a FUD type post... No was the right response and all it required...

    No x3

As long as the oil viscosity was the right viscosity and NOT the 0-20 stuff they put in the camrys and other lame ass toyota car, you're fine.

If they put in the 0-20 synthetic, yes go back and have them fix it.

Once again, an oil thread filled with misinformation. ONCE AGAIN, I will just leave this here.

PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy... some of you really need to read this. Otherwise you're just going to keep spouting bullshit and look stoopid. So, really, I'm doing you a solid.
