What dealership is it? I had almost the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. Stopped by a new dealership to get a potential trade in value, and was told there was an minor accident that was repaired a few years before I bought it. Carfax was clean when I purchased it. My dealership was in Lititz, PA.

My sister was the first and original owner of a civic that was in several accidents including one with major front end damage which I'm surprised insurance didnt total it, anyway bodyshop fixed it each time thru insurance and when we finally sold it years later, not one accident showed up on the carfax.

Imo the only good thing about carfax is you can see how many owners the car had and what states were registered in

The only 100% accurate report that will show all insurance claims is a CLUE report from Lexisnexis. Problem is, only you can request a free one for your history. You get one free every year like a credit report. If your associated with an insurance company and they have a contract with Lexisnexis, with the persons permission, you can run the report. I HIGHLY suggest everyone do this every year! The affect of your CLUE report on your insurance rates is equivalent to the affect of a credit report when getting loans!

I found 8 mistakes on mine! Including a reported accident where I was listed as a 40 yr old female living in Pennsylvania! They corrected the errors within 30 days.

It's totally free, no strings attached, they have to give it to you by law, just like your credit report. If you weary about it, ask your insurance agent about CLUE reports.

    So what?

    1. Its your responsibility to run the VIN to check for accidents prior to purchase, not the dealer.
That info can be found publicly on Carfax in a few seconds.

    2. As long as it was fixed why do you care?

    3. The only time it ends up on the report is when repairs are done through insurance. My previous truck was in two minor accidents. All fixed in cash by me. According to the VIN, no accidents. Its not a perfect system.

Vehicles are a constantly depreciating asset. Its just a fact of life. I have no idea why people get so bent out of shape over their truck previously being in any sort of accident.
Now bad accidents that total and salvage a title, I get that.
A fender bender that gets fixed... cry me a fucking river.

Your car being in an accident that was repaired correctly does not deminish value. Don’t let a dealer talk you down over that. If they won’t give you a fair trade go elsewhere.

My truck was in an accident that damaged the drivers side bed panel. It must have been bad enough to require a whole new panel because I’m a detailer and can see zero evidence of bondo or repaint/blend.
I still bought it. Still to this day I can’t see a single flaw with the repair.

Plus, the exclusive CARFAX Buyback Guarantee reduces the risk involved in buying a used car. If the CARFAX Report fails to include a DMV-issued branded title (such as salvage, fire or flood damage, and odometer problems), CARFAX may buy the vehicle back for the full purchase price.*

    **
CARFAX Vehicle History products and services are based only on information supplied to CARFAX. CARFAX does not have the complete history of every vehicle. Use the CARFAX search as one important tool, along with a vehicle inspection and test drive, to make a better decision about your next used car.

Carfax don't mean shit. Sorry OP, but it is up to you when buying a used vehicle to have it checked by someone you trust.

Was the truck not repaired correctly?
Does it have an issue that makes it unsafe?

Its not a perfect system and they didn’t know when you bought it. So its not like they knowingly decieved you.

I would fight them on it. If they don’t give you a fair trade in value sell private.

The huge advantage to a trade is the reduction on sales tax, so always take that into consideration on trade value vs hassel of private sale.

If a vehicle is correctly repaired why would it deminish value?

I’m not taking less for my truck over an accident I still to this day cannot even tell happened.

    I have no idea.

In my state insurance companies do not hand out deminished value claims. That kind if coverage can vary by state.

The economic loss in a property's value as a result of having been damaged in a accident or repair-related diminished value or Immediate diminished value always effects the resale/trade-in....

3 Types of Diminished Value: Definitions
    • Immediate Diminished Value - The immediate diminished value is the difference in the resale or trade-in value of the car from before the accident to after the accident when repairs have been done.
    • Inherent Diminished Value - Inherent diminished value assumes the vehicle has been repaired following an accident to its original condition, with the exception of the fact that it is now considered as a vehicle that has been in an accident. This perception reduces the value a person may get for the vehicle when they try and sell it or trade it in, compared to what they would have gotten before, as in the example above.

    • Repair Related Diminished Value - Repair related diminished value is the lost value that is resulting specifically from the quality of repairs, for example, if the paint color is not a perfect match or if generic parts were used in the repairs or aftermarket parts, then the quality of the repair left a definite loss in value on the vehicle following the accident, beyond the simple inherent diminished value that already exists from an accident alone.

The statute of limitations on torts is between 2/6 in just about all States, this means that you need to file suit against the at fault driver within 2/6 years of the accident for a economic lose at which time there insurance will step in.....

I bet you tell the dealer when trading your truck in that it has been repaired from an accident the price goes down...
