For those new tacoma buyers, did anyone opt for an extended warranty? What did it cost and how long does it last? Did it save your bacon on any of these dreaded paint or rust issues we are all too familiar with? If this is covered already I could not find a dedicated forum and i apologize in advance.

A variety of products are offered. You have to read each one to know your answers.

Tip. MANY dealers offer aftermarket products. Most of which have more exclusions than you can imagine.

Depends on cost and how much you plan to drive. I quickly got to 100k. At 98k I noticed the infamous timing chain cover leak. That alone saved me a few thousand over the cost of the warranty I had gotten.

Yeah. I get it. I’m an attorney and know the exclusion game well. Hopefull thinking. I used to think it was dumb to get a warranty for a Japanese car. I used to drive a 2001 Honda prelude and it ended up being worthless because it was such a bulletproof vehicle in every way. After being on this forum, I expect my new Tacoma to disintegrate at 10 miles.

If you are expecting your Tacoma to disintegrate at the 10 mile mark then why are you purchasing a Tacoma? With that mindset you might as well get the added insurance.

If you're going to get a warranty, I'd strongly recommend the plan from Toyota vs an alternate plan. Also shop around as most dealers mark up the plans dramatically. When I negotiated my 2022, the dealer started out @ 3 times what the plan cost. I got them to match my online quote but somewhat regret buying it thru them because they tried to rip me off so bad in the beginning.

If you search on this site, you will find a couple of dealers that will give a much more reasonable quote on the Toyota plan.

I agree that the Tacomas are dependable vehicles but my 2014 had the radio die about 7k miles after the basic warranty expired and my extended warranty got me a new radio for $0 and that alone would have cost much more than I paid for the plan. I imagine most people don't recoup the cost of the plan but that was my experience.

I don’t really think that. In the back of my mind, I tend to discount this thread because it is an aggregator of the worst issues in a vehicle produced in the millions. So it’s not representative at all. It does have a psychological impact though and to alleviate that nagging “what if” I’m thinking of getting the insurance so I don’t worry. But if it excludes the big scary issues it’s not worth it.

    Oh look, another mod....

According to the link you sent, the things it does not cover are the minor things (Hoses, valves, spark plugs, clamps, sensors, etc..) that can CAUSE major issues. I get what you're saying, and having that warm security blanket may help me sleep sounder at night, but...is it really worth the cost?

It's a real crap shoot. Some will say "Yes, it saved my butt and I didn't have to pay $5k for a new motor!" others will say "Dude, I spent $x.xx on the warranty and never used it at all, and I put 198,000 on my Taco."

Also, the interior, brakes, chrome, clutch plate, etc... are excluded. It seemed pretty worthless to me.

Problem is sensors on the motor, or transmission are likely to fail first. Told these can be quite expensive. Any electronic's in the truck would also be covered by the extended warranty. These are not covered by the 5 year powertrain warranty, or the 3 year 36k mile warranty once thats over. I didn't go for the extended warranty hoping this truck is as reliable as my gen1 tundra which went over 10 years without any of those issues.

These are all fair points. All depends on what it costs I suppose.

Yep. The extended warranty saved me money. I'm glad I purchased it. The 3rd Gen Tacoma is not the reliable truck that many of us were familiar with in the past. I fully expect to use it again ...the extended warranty... that is.
