I personally did not purchased it. I figured if something breaks I'll upgrade it.

I purchased the Toyota extended care on our new 20 4Runner and my used 18 Tacoma while it was still under the factory warranty. Haven’t needed it for the runner yet but on the Taco so far it has covered a new leaky factory trifold tonneau cover and also covered a new gas door which is a common fail point on these trucks. I spent about $1200 a piece on both warranties which is fairly cheap, plus in the event of a quick flip or total loss the warranty can be refunded (pro rated) or credited towards a new warranty on a replacement vehicle. It was a bit of a No brainer for me.

Never had one and never will. My faith is in Toyota and has been for over 35 years of reliable and durable vehicles. Other than those who come here whining about all stupid little things that make no sense to me. As my last 5 Tacomas( 94-98-04-08) over the years where bullet proof with no troubles at all. My latest 2021 TRD Sprt Premium which turned 1 year old today the 24 as been great and I love it no issues yet fingers crossed.

My experience with any warranty is usually if a problem, its going to happen during the time of the original warranty period, or sooner. After that your truck will be pretty much used up with high mileage being old, generally then the crap will hit the fan.

Didn't buy the extended warranty. If something major happens I'll buy something else anyway.

    Dealership extended warranty? Noooo.

Factory? Yeah, maybe. There are enough junk capacitors coming from China that I am expecting an electronic failure. Repairing them can be a tad spendy.

Dude! Let me break it down...
    1.2M Tacomas sold.
Most people with issues post here. Let's call it a thousand people.
    Do the math.
    Buy the truck.
Mine came with a Toyota extended warranty. First vehicle in my life that I have had one. Do not expect to use it. Truck had 3K miles on it when I got it so it was certified pre owned by Toyota.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
There’s three levels or plans. Cost all depends on your current miles, plan selection and year term.
There’s a lot to digest on studying these. Don’t buy into on first look.
I’ll be buying into one for my ‘19 Sport. I’m buying my lease out in a couple weeks along with the warranty.
If Toyota ever decides to build more Tacomas illl sell remained back.

You say your an attorney, so it's likely your smart and able to compose a rational argument for and against the warranty. I bought the Toyota extended warranty from a vendor I found here in one of the threads. Why? Because I worry about shit, and I seem to be a shit magnet. For the most part (I feel) it protects me from electrical problems with sensors I can't bother to learn about and the associated powertrain. I'm not worried about things like paint or rust. I'm worried about a big mechanical issue that I can't deal with myself. I am getting older and don't enjoy working on shit any more. The toyota platinum plan is described as being comparable to a bumper to bumper warranty.. I don't know if that's exactly accurate and I will be honest I didn't really worry about it.

At the end of the day I am gambling about the cost of a cheeseburger a month for 10years/125k miles of coverage and I don't have to worry about it any longer. I'm also not a kid, struggling trying to make a car payment each month and the cost of the truck and the warranty was such a small percentage of my disposable income that it was irrelevant in the end. I'll be happy if I don't have to use it.

Another thing to consider.... 1500$ in todays dollars isn't going to buy you shit in 3-5-7 years down the road. That 2k$ repair today might end up being a 5k$ repair

I like to advise by them simply on personal experience. On my previous car I spent $1300 on the 7yr/100k warranty. I drove that thing a lot. Over the course of ownership I did have to make a few extended warranty claims. Every single power door lock all around went bad between 50k an 80k miles, and also had a Water Pump replaced around 65K. Probably total it was close to $2000 I would say, but I got my money out of it. But then someone like my old man, he hardly drove his truck, he bought the extended warranty, it expired and he never made a claim. It's all on your circumstances.

    Never on a Toyota.

Except for commercial use or expected abuse.

Unfortunately a lot of people are needlessly pressured into it.

They tried to sell it to my mom while I was sitting next to her in my Toyota uniform. Piss off.

I am 50 and have plenty of money in the bank to fix anything that may go wrong on one of my 4 vehicles. However, I absolutely hate spending money on vehicle repairs and Mechanics/ shops give me $$$$ anxiety.

I wish that I had bought it on my ‘06 PreRunner. It would have covered the timing chain leak that I have been living with for what seems like forever. The repair is going to cost about 2 to 3 times what an extended warranty would have so I just live with it and the spots on my driveway.

My last truck ‘17 GMC Sierra needed a new transmission at 80k that an extended warranty would have covered. Did not buy it and out 4k for a rebuild. Sold immediately to purchase my 22 Pro.

My wife’s ‘11 Avalon has had no issues so luckily I did not purchase one. I am going to get the 8 year 125k Platinum on my new ‘22 Pro from Wolverine Toyota in MI. I am worried about another timing cover leak and all of the electronics. I figure it is worth an extra 2% over the price of my new truck for a little added piece of mind.

Do what helps you sleep at night and don’t worry about how other people plan their finances.

In my 2010 tacoma I bought the 7yr/100k warranty for $1100 at the time. 1 month before it expired I looked over the truck and saw a torn passenger side LCA boot which leaked the grease inside ( which can’t be repaired) and they have to replace the entire LCA. ($1000 included an alignment) I also complained about a “noise” in the engine, so that made the dealer look over the entire engine to make sure nothing was wrong.

just my way of making sure I at least break even.

just think of this, if the A/C goes out or leaks, right there is like $2k-$3k to fix. I entirely trust the engine and transmission of a Tacoma, everything else is up to chance…..Just saying.

You bring up a very good point. One of my favorite things about the Tacoma is how basic it is. Analog gauges, pull brake lever, it still has buttons and knobs. Most of the new cars have touchscreens and instrument displays. A lot of electronics in these newer rigs and these modules can get expensive if they go bad. I can turn a wrench, but I can't program software. The more technology you put into these cars, and it goes bad, the more likely you'll have to visit the dealership to have the car worked on by a trained tech. Mechanically, Toyota is fantastic. Technology wise, ehhhh, i dunno. If I had to gauge if off the pixelated rear camera, I would say Toyota is not up there. An extended warranty in your back pocket can keep money in that pocket.

Basically i've had the same experience as your old man, but i never had the extended warranty. I now drive less than 10k miles a year being retired. Even when i was working putting on nearly 20k a year i never had major issues with my tundra other than the routine maintenance, and pricer stuff like the timing belt kits. It was after more than 10 years close to 200k the truck started to nickel, and dime me.

Came across this warranty thread. If you are buying the car new I'd suggest calling your insurance company. Many of them offer an extension of the factory warranty for pennies compared to the stealerships. I added an extended warranty to my Geico policy 7 years 100k miles for $37 every 6 months. $518 for a 7 year warranty with a $150 deductible. Sold!
