Dealership never took my down payment, what would you do?

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by TonyWhats, Mar 9, 2016.

?

What would you do?

  1. Call immediately and give the the $5,000.

    50.6%
  2. Hope they never realize the mistake, but when they do play dumb and give them the $5,000.

    24.7%
  3. Hope they never realize the mistake, but when they do deny you owe anything.

    24.7%

Long story short, purchased my Tacoma 2 weeks ago. After chewing them down on the price, I agreed to put 5,000 down and finance the rest.

Everything was fine, then low and behold I entered the sales office and the price was wrong for both my new Tacoma (more) and what they were giving me for my trade (less). We'll after a heated argument in which the GM insulted my intelligence for "not understanding his offer" (it was not what we agreed upon) and all but walking out of the dealership after we shook hands on the deal, the papers were signed, original deal was done. They took my trade in, gave me the keys and wished me well.

All except they never asked for the deposit. To be honest it didn't register with me until I was in the Tacoma on the way home, probably because I was pissed at the BS shiesty trick they tried to pull at the last minute. (The sales contract says they accepted $5000 cash down.)

Initially I figured I'd get a call that night about the money (never happened). Then maybe the end of the month (never happened). One week, two weeks (nothing).

The issue has been resolved the way I originally figured it would, just wanna see what everyone would have done in my position.

Goes to show you how incompetent some dealers are.

When the deal gets finalized with the bank there will be a shortage, then they'll want their money. Don't spend it!

Hmmmm.....I'm all for honesty and the whole "shit will come back around later to fuck you karma deal" but that assclown (typical salesman bullshit) got what was coming to him.

Shady shiesty shenanigans ain't gonna get you anywhere. The only thing that would worry me is they tacked that $5000 onto your payments or slid it in somewhere in your deal? But if they forgot and you forgot and already signed papers, got the keys and the truck is in your possession than ........fuck them!

Yea, spoke to the manager today, and settled the balance. But not before asking him if it says I paid $5000 cash, and how could you prove I didn't? It's not like I snuck out the back door and peeled out.

I'm not a crook, and wouldn't want the black cloud of guilt hovering.

Integrity is doing the right thing when you could get away with doing the wrong thing because of a technicality. A man's word should be worth more than a few dollars.

I'd sit on the cash until they called me. Salesmen are greasy. And I'd make them come and get the cash once they figured out what they did.I don't have time for other people stupidity

    Well done OP.

Think too if-when the error is found and you go in for service, you don't want them to remember you negatively. While it was precipitated by their shadiness, there is a GM dealer I will never be able to show my face at again

well in Auto business for twenty some odd years they cannot ask for you now legally make sure check your contract and see if they did not change your actual contract, and call the bank and check the price down payment and trade difference

They would have realized and gotten ahold of you. I drove my truck for three weeks before I made the down payment.

You did the correct thing and I have no issue with you waiting to make it right. Honestly, with that BS I would have waited and made them come get the cash at my convinience after I made contact. I'd buy parts from you simply because of this thread and this shows exactly why there should be a sales feedback system on TW.
