Did you not read the post he made 4 months ago about hearing noises in his brakes and being specifically TOLD it was impacted with lots of mud/sand and to clean it out and he just ignored it?

In this case, Fast Frank is absolutely correct.

And THAT is what our society has become. No personal accountability. Hire a lawyer...sue someone. I want someone to pay. I’m entitled!

    Sorry for the rant.

Wow. You sir, should seek a career in criminal justice; that was all worded beautifully.

This truck has only ever been in mud once, and that was also the only time it has ever been stuck. It did sit in soupy mud up about 1/3 of the way up the rear wheels for about 30 minutes until a buddy arrived to assist with recovery.

I power washed my truck when I got home as I always do after taking it off pavement... washed off the tires and brakes from both the outside, as well as from underneath the truck. No, I did not think I would need to take my wheels off and dissect my drum brakes, as it was to my understanding that Toyota added drum brakes to this truck to better suit off road use since they are supposedly “sealed”.

There has never been any pulling to one side when braking, the truck drives and stops straight as a bullet. There has also never been ANY sort of nasty, grabby, jerky, noisy grinding either. Not by any means. I’m saying this as someone who is overly obsessive about unusual sounds coming from my truck. The brake never felt ‘soft’... it has always stopped without problem.

Now... since I ‘ignored an amazing amount of warning’... I must ask you sir, what would you have done differently other than already having the knowledge that the drum brakes which are designed to keep out dirt, sand, and mud (per toyota engineers) are not truly providing this function that they claim.

You didn't say all that haha. Seriously, as much as you truly use a pressure washer, a cheap one will last for years. With that said, for me, It has to have a Honda engine. That is my only real spec. I use my pressure washer maybe five times a year for an hour or so at a time, and I do my decks, sidewalks, gutters, etc.

Four months ago was your warning. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/advice-for-cleaning-out-rear-drum-brakes.525436/

For future reference, unless it is built to a specific military spec, Mud, Dust, Water and Sand can and will get into everything. Every crack, crevasse, seal, pocket and corner. Go off road, have fun! When you are done though, clean it ALL.

Only get something with a Honda engine. No Subaru. No Briggs and Stratton. Honda only. Had one with a Honda Engine and it lasted forever. Gave it away and got a new one with Briggs and Stratton that failed on first use. Get hot, shut off, wont start. Took that piece of shit back.

I think I am going to pick this one up soon.

I have a ryobi attachment its 3 nozzles on wheels that attaches to the pressure washer.

It doesn't have that much pressure on mine (1900PSI) with all the heads but it does a decent job at removing the mud from under it. I also use it in the summer as a salt wash.
Drums actualy have better stopping power too since they have more surface area and contact area. Only problem is heat.

On a seperate note, now that my CV boots have been torn open long enough for the both entire CV axles to need replacing, anyone know how similar the procedure is to the 2nd gen?

I think destroyed is alittle harsh. Yes and i agree with you it was passive aggressive. Op got shit end of the stick either way no reason in talking down to him on what he did wrong to “destroy his vehicle”

I am learning quickly that tacomas are not designed for off road use. coming from a JK wrangler the tacoma struggles on some of the easiest of obstacles. I'm really holding out for the new JT wrangler truck.

Replacing the CV axle will be the same process as on the 2nd gens.

Should be the same. I just replaced passenger axle on my sister in laws 16 sport(fubar dealer lift) went and bought an axle from autozone which appeared to be out of 2nd gen, no issues. It was a reman axle.. cost around $80.
