Any time you do something in high volume, due to simple probability, mistakes will happen. It is easy to say that you wouldn't make that mistake at home, when you work on one, maybe two, vehicles once every month or two. When you work on 25 vehicles a week per tech, or more, then it happens more often.

I also find the monday morning quarterbacking interesting. Unless you have actual experience in a dealership environment, you really don't know what you can and can't do.

    sometimes I work on 25 a day....
I had helpers, but even happens solo depending on repair type & how all my stars line-up for the day / week...
Not always but also not unheard of..

I'm surprised you're the first person to mention this. I'd have to imagine if I were in the same scenario, I'd consider at the very least discussing this route with the dealer before making a final decision on how to proceed. Thats not to say it'd be the route I'd settle on, but I'd definitely want to know what else might be on the table. Obviously this doesn't warrant a new truck, I'm not insinuating that at all; just stating that this option pretty much does away with the worries of shitty tech work. I'd be curious to know what trade-in deals for other used trucks on the lot with similar mileage are on the table, or maybe even deals towards a new truck if you had been on the fence about upgrading sometime soon.

All that being said, this is a 2017 truck; I have to imagine its been paid off for a couple years, or if bought used, very close to paid off. This changes that discussion entirely, and turns it more from a "use this time as a deal on an upgrade" to a "upgrading was forced to happen earlier than I wanted" discussion. It obviously costs OP more to start financing/buy something else. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be having that discussion though; I'd rather at least consider an upgrade I know is put together correctly when work that extensive from a not-so-confidence-inspriring dealer is the other option on the table.

Exactly. As the consumer who is on the shit end of the stick in this situation, it would be at least worth the shot to try and guage their response to it. At least lay that card out on the table and let them say yay or nay to it. Bottom line: collect and gather all of the information from the informed parties and make a decision based on that. In my own mind, I just could not come to terms with a used engine that came with no warranty on it, and even if it did, the question gets asked then is it really worth the risk?

    No..
    carfax works off the vin.
Theres no linking associating a particular engine to the vin off numbers on the engine.
Unless the wrecking yard has that info "the vin for the car that the eng came out of" & willing to share it.

Im not up to speed everything carfax related but would imagine all sorts of maint can be performed & you wont see it on a carafax.....
    Its not the Bible....
No idea how maint would get reported to carfax.
If they get oil changes done at an independent or Walmart, jiffy lube, etc...
Not going to see that on CF...

Funny, prices on those are higher than they were new.
