Is this the standard? Or did they just bypass this option.

I own a 2017 TRD Offroad 4x4. They attributed this due to synthetic oil in my engine.

    Little confused...

    thanks.

Correct, but they are your allotted oil changes and you "should" be able to
use them whenever you like. I get 4 or 5 per the Toyota care doc. I used 1 at 3k,
7k, 11k and will have the last one done in Sept. @ what should be 17k. My 2 year
plan is up in Oct. and I drive less than 900 miles per month so at that rate I would
have used only 1 or 2.

At 5k checkup its just a fluid check and tire rotation. That's why some of us here changed out our oil early because Toyota doesn't change it until 10k

Yeah, Toyota only requires oil change every 10k but many of us changed it more frequently early on. While 10k is correct for synthetic oil on a modern engine, I like to change it a couple of times before that to help get the metal shavings out. Not sure if it makes a lot of difference but I can't imagine all those shavings in there doesn't cause some unnecessary friction.

I bet the owners guide for the 17 is like my 06 was. That is it is mileage or time, whichever comes first.

So for those who drive very little the time factor would hit before the milage. I basically had to do 2 oil changes per year. Each on the 6 month interval. I would remind the service advisor of that if you have met the time criteria.

I think the maintenance guide says 5000 only if severe duty, otherwise its 10k.

So how do we get Toyota to understand that we use our trucks "severe duty"?

You are allotted however many oil changes are standard in the toyotacare mileage. You can ask them to do oil changes earlier, you won't get extra free ones though.

I had the dealer do one for me at 5k. I paid for it. Wanted to start building a relationship with them. Spend a few buck with them, and they are more likely to use their "Goodwill" for you in the future, when/if you have any issues after your warranty runs out. I know this, because I am a tech at a dealer. And we are more likely to help those out, then the ones who only come in for warranty repairs. Then want help after the warranty has expired. The manufacture asks what type of customer you have been when making decisions to help with Goodwill. The better the customer, the more they help out. I have seen the manufacture step up and cover complete cost of repairs for some of our very good customers.

My 10k should come in around this winter anyways so I'll let them do it since I don't have a heated garage. Haha

I find it crazy that it is recommended 10k for the first oil change. Engine break in is a real thing. The first oil change may be the most important one that can be performed. Having built multiple engines, I don't feel comfortable waiting until 10k on my Taco.

I changed mine at 1500 and it was still pretty clean---had a few specs of shiny metal in the oil and not much in the filter... all in all it was still pretty clean but now I can be at ease knowing I got a good portion of the gunk out
