You won't need until 10k. No need for it earlier.

This is good to know but...unless a customer is a total pain in the ass and shows their ass everytime they go in, I would hope techs/mechanics at dealerships do their job.

I consider myself a level headed courteous guy but I don't see the need to make "best friends" with my dealership. I had to get my wife a car last week and Ford sent two surveys for us to fill out. One was so bad that I wasn't sure how to answer 1/3 of the questions. One was "Do you absolutely love the dealership you bought your car at?" I found that question laugh-out-loud ridiculous. A lot of "love" questions. I think hippies are running Ford. Still waiting on my Toyota survey(s).

After taking the Ford surveys I actually feel sorry for anyone who's career lives or dies by the poor quality of many of the questions.

@InfernoTaco My point wasn't to become besties with my dealer. But to establish a relationship. You know. A little goodwill on my part. Show I'm willing to spend some money with them. Not just be the "guy who comes in for his free warranty work". Trust me. As a dealership tech I see those people. They come in once a year for their free State Insp and an oil change. And never do any maintenance with us. And those are the ones that cry the hardest to the manufacturer when something breaks on their car.

And the manufacturer usually doesn't help them in any way. But the guy who comes in and gets his 20,30,40,50,60k services done. When he has an issues. The service writer will direct them who to call and what to say to get assistance.

You spend some money with us. And we will make sure the manufacturer helps you if you have a big breakdown.

I don't see why people have such a hard time with that. It's insulting to us tech on forum, to hear people refer to us as stealerships. (Not saying you do). We want to make sure your cars and trucks are safe and maintained.

    Just my .02 worth.

    Edit:
Oh and we hate those surveys. They expect 100% on everything. And a lot of that is out of the writes control. Like amenities or facility cleanliness. My all time fav. Easy of access into and out of the dealership. Unless you are off an access road. Of course it is going to be hard to get in and out during peak traffic times.

Sure can't speak for anyone else on this forum, but when I think of dishonest or shady car dealerships, it's usually the salespeople or the managers that come to mind. Almost never the techs unless I specifically see something wrong.
But I appreciate what you're saying, can't paint all with the same brush.

Maintenance light turned on yesterday when I hit 5000miles, so I took it to the dealership today for service. They only did multi check inspection, brake checks and tire rotation.
Service writer noted "most models do not have oil change at this interval" on my receipt. So I assume no oil change at 5k.

I feel like the 32.2K I gave them for the truck was enough money to start the relationship.

I get what you're saying, but I disagree. They should do the job they are paid to do. Period.

I work on new toyota engines serviced with 0w20, some 10w30 and 15w40 on their diesel industrial engines. Always changed at 250 to sometimes 1500 hours worse than miles. Some shavings come out but most are in the filter. I personally change filters between the 10k oil change interva . The 0w20 oil even though dark in color is still in good condition and not gassed out.

I didn't buy my truck from the dealer tha services it. And buying it does not establish a relationship with the service department, who will be the ones to help you in the future if you have issues post warranty. The sales dept could care less at this point if you have

I did my first at 500 miles. While it was ''clean'' it had enough of a silvery sheen due to metal particles from break in that I would likely recommend it. Besides, I don't need some $10 an hour all purpose lot wash employee doing oil changes. I also grease threads on skid plates and actually check underneath far better then they ever will.

The only fluids I would want checked are the differentials and transmission fluid personally. Toyota has issues with both of those from the factory as far as being properly filled.

no thanks, already spent about 40k on the truck, kinda sad they expect (as you stated)
customers, who've already spent a lot of money to spend even more money on services
that are due to them based on the product purchased- or they may not get good service.
You sound like part of the problem, not the solution to the way ppl think about dealerships.

Alright, now you are just being silly. If I buy my truck from the same dealer that I take it to for service, the depts can go F themselves. I'm buying from a dealer, not a sales department or a service department.

It just sounds like bribes at this point.

Tell me where I said you may not get good service. Toyota will not care that you spent 40K 5 yrs from now when your truck is out of warranty. But they will, and be willing to help you if you regularly serviced your vech with them. They will, in their mind, think you are a good return customer, who was willing to spend a few dollars with them to maintain your truck. And in return, they will step up and use Goodwill warranty to repair your truck.

I don't understand why people think the "strealership" is out to rip them off. IF you had a bad experience at one. Use a different one. Same as you would at the local steak house. Don't like the service or food at one. Go to the other one. Just that simple.

Point I'm trying to make that keeps getting missed, is this. And I have seen this many many times over the 15 yrs working for dealerships. Manufactures are willing to Goodwill repairs to customers who are willing to spend the money with the dealer to maintain their vech. If you are a loyal customer, they will in return be loyal to you. In doing this they hope you will continue to do buy/service your cars with them.

~Had my dealer do the first oil change on my truck at 5K, it was all free of charge.
As others said with it being sa brand new engine I didn't want to wait til 10k to do it due to metal filings in there etc.. I plan on taking good care of this truck and keeping it for awhile.

I think the argument can go both ways, reading the responses. But I have experienced good care even with long time service out of warranty. Sometimes I'll get a discount from the SA on an expensive repair, even had locking nuts replaced free when one got stripped out. I've only had one bad experience with an SA, and I don't deal with him at all, the rest are good and the SM has been great to me, and any concern I have he takes seriously and addresses it promptly. I'll keep going for service, if they mess it up, they will fix it. I can see why others will avoid the dealer due to terrible experiences, but so far my service dept. is pretty good.
There are plenty who work at a dealership that take pride in their work and do their best, but those who are sloppy make everyone look bad. But what profession doesn't have this problem?!

    all tore up already
THATS BECAUSE THEIR MONTHLY BONUS DEPEND ON IT. IF YOUR PAYCHECK COULD BE TRASHED BECAUSE OF A MISUNDERSTANDING I BET YOU'D CLARIFY ALSO.

    Ps why are we yelling?

Pps my issue with dealer service is the wording. If severe duty change oil every 5k. Then define severe duty as anywhere that gets below freezing or if you frequently drive short trips. Well in new england it occasionally drops below freezing yet they dont follow severe duty schedule. Mine will do the change for free if i bring filter and oil though so thats nice.

My last bmw was an 09 e90 and they wouldnt touch the oil until either 18 months or 18k. Thats crazy imo. Especially for cars notorious for burning oil

Mine was black as can be at 1600 miles. Color is no indication of oil life/aging.
