I had to pay for my 5k oil change, they did offer to by pass the 5k and just do the 10k at 5K.

An old timer mechanic told me years ago you should change the oil at 500 miles on a new engine to flush out the metal shavings. Why drive around for 10 K miles with metal shavings..

Manufacturing tolerances were also different a long time ago, requiring more bed-in with rings and other components. As tolerances have tightened a lot less gets shed into the oil. Old timers also did oil changes every 3000 miles or three months whichever came first. Even with that you were lucky to reach 80,000 miles without major repairs performed. Technology changes.

*shrug* It won't hurt to do an early change, but I don't think it has the degree of importance it once did.

Can't hurt but I don't think it's applicable today. I' sure what he considered a new engine
is quite different from today's technology.

Maybe they could have put a little bit more effort into the over all truck? Like making sure fluid levels are correct from the factory or not needing to take my brand new truck in for flash updates. Yea, effort you say?

I have also heard some experts in the field say that this 10k oil change is a sham.

I wasn't waiting. The Book said 1,000 mile break-in. Once that was done I had it in for oil change. Paid out of pocket - no big deal.

Meh. Look long enough and you can typically find experts claiming whatever position you want to support.

I'll go with actual measured data rather than hearsay or superstition. On a prior vehicle with a 15k OCI I had a UOA done at around 8000 miles; commentary from Blackstone was that the oil had plenty of life left. I typically hit the 12 month time interval before I hit the mileage interval in the years I owned that vehicle so 15k was moot.

I will do similarly with my Tacoma.

I don't get why you don't exercise one of the many options you have.

    1. Take the risk or whatever you want to call it and wait until 10k to have the dealership change it.
    2. Read the damn book, go to your service adviser at 5k and say, "I've been towing and using the truck heavily" in which case you get the oil changed at 5k (what I did).
    3. Change your own oil at whatever time/mileage you desire. Takes but a few minutes, almost zero skills and it'll be done properly.

If funny part is if you look at what manufactures look at for severe duty we all qualify.

    Driving conditions are considered severe:
    • For repeated short distances.
    • In dusty or sandy areas, in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are used.
    • On rough or muddy roads.
    • In mountainous areas.
    • For extended periods of idling or low speed operation.
    • For prolonged periods in cold or extremely humid climates.
    • More than 50% of driving in heavy city traffic in temperatures above 90°F.
    • If using brakes extensively.

I told my dealer that I wanted my oil changed every 5K - They said ...No problem. Think your dealer is trying to save a buck under their Toyota Care deal. One thing I have learned on this forum - Not all dealers are the same!!!!!

Get back to us once you've actually received more than the two free oil changes.
