It most definetely is a "power close" so, I'm not too sure how I can "slam it...??" Typically, I just keep pressure on it as it's doing its "power close" thing... Maybe they [the dealership] didn't??

not all, & the ones with the power lift tailgate are having more issues as the motor can't put enough ummmph into latching it correctly...
There's been a case documented here somewhere, few guys went & opened & rewatched their tailgates as I suggested & verified I was correct....
I just dont see any impacts to indicate the tailgate was compromised & that's excactly how the look when the driver side doesn't catch the latch correctly.
Further more, when its like that you can't grab the TG & shake it & see slop, it looks latched correctly...
But, end of the day its not..

Ok, I'm on it - - whenever I get back over there - - it's almost 2-hours round trip, plus the stay - - so, need to find the time. In the meantime, I'm still waiting for the GM to call me back... Don't want to just "show up" until they are ready to discuss this further...

There's another case documented here somewhere about his power tailgate doing the same thing.
Really doubt its accident related, but whatever, they will make you whole at the end of the day.
Think the other guy was saying he thought is was misbzuilt & was getting a new bed if I remember correctly, no eta on parts....
    Outcome was probably never updated...

I wouldn't drive 2 hours to further discuss...
    Drive after its fixed...
I know your pissed, stressed, bummed, but dont think its that bad...
You can easily express the latch concern over the phone, give them some info fur them to further evaluate the situation.
Express, last thing you want is for the to repaint something...
    Go from there..
Pick it up when its finished...
Its there screw-up, make them put you in a complimentary rental brought to you, or picked at your nearest enterprise..

Toyota App; Choose your Car [we have multiple Toyotas]; Status on Center Top; Refresh/Update [Circle w/Arrow Button] on Bottom; "Find" Menu on Bottom Left; Choose "Drive Pulse & Trips"; You're there... I think it's free for 1st year; then you need a paid subscription for following years...

Definitely would be hesitant on "we won't report it to Carfax". I'm not a lawyer but accidents have to be reported to insurance in CA. This could be borderline fraud depending on your state and if you care about that kind of thing.

    no...
if they were straight, you couldn't get the spare tire in place..
also they're bent the wrong way for backing into something...
but to verify we need to look at another truck...

What they have stated is “won’t report to their insurance… So, no CarFax to worry about.”

My problem is: what happens when a bean counter with their group (they have lots of dealerships) decides to make a claim and not tell me. It could happen and be out of my control…
