I have worked in corrections for 7 years and I have a BS in criminal justice administration. Although I am crazy, my statement was not.

We, as a society, have gone from punishing criminals to trying to "rehabilitate them". It isn't working.

Singapore will cane the shit out of people in public for committing crimes. They have a much lower crime rate than we do. Because punishment is certain, swift, and severe.

    Thank you. Ditto.

Life is about choices. Make good ones.

Besides, I never said I wanted prison to be brutal. I said I wanted it unpleasant. Right now they have books, TV, recreation, coffee pots, etc... they do nothing all day but eat, sleep and work out.

MAKE them work for free to pay their own way, and in the process... teach them a trade. Win/win.

Plus... the war on drugs is an abject failure. You'd think we'd realize that prohibition does not work since it bombed in the 20's and 30's. Incarcerating druggies makes sophisticated criminals out of dopers. Let 'em do drugs and kill themselves with it. IDGAF. Arresting them, housing them, trying them, etc... costs us way, way too much.

The data seems to disagree with you.

Cuba has a rehabilitation program where only 16% of people end up back in prison after the program.
    http://www.publiceye.org/defendingjustice/pdfs/factsheets/9-Fact Sheet - US vs World.pdf

Again 16% in Norway with rehab focused programs.
    http://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/feb/25/norwegian-prison-inmates-treated-like-people

This is compared to 60% in the US.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recidivism

Apparently 70% of prisoners have been assaulted physically and between 9-20% have been sexually assaulted. Getting ass raped sounds pretty unpleasant to me...

I know I would rather have someone finish their time in prison and be able to contribute to society rather than toss a coin to see if they will be back in prison.

What's the point of giving like 8 life sentences? It's just a drawn out death penalty that costs more than just doing it off the bat. If Undeniably guilty of some heinous crime I'm all for it!

I agree 100% with this. The war on drugs has cost over a trillion dollars now and drug use rates are at the highest they have ever been.

Pretty much just handing money to the Mexican cartels at this point...

There are lies, damn lies and statistics. Data can be manipulated.

I'm not saying it CAN'T work. I'm saying what we are doing is not working. Einstein said if you do the same thing over and over and expect a different result, that's insane.

Eh I don't know, on the one hand if it were me I'd want the guy killed, however it's supposedly more expensive to do the death penalty than life. Then you also get into doesn't that make you just as bad as the guy who did the crime? Also people who get put into prison for x amount of years really get a bad wrap as there is a very minimal chance they will productive when they get out. I like the labor idea better. But this is merica' where we're like no abortions but yay for death penalty.

I'm pretty sure we're talking about the death penalty, which is people who will never get out of prison even if we don't kill them. I have no interest in rehabilitating axe murderers and releasing them. I want the possibility of them ever doing it again reduced to as near absolute zero as it can be. Geuss what? If they're dead they can't do it again... Unless they're Hindu.

While you are technically correct, the issue is that you have to believe in the same believe for the peace to apply....
