    Saline Cover Page.jpg

I recently got a copy of a new book done as a limited printing History of Saline Valley by Timothy Dahlia (a long time springs visitor). It is a collection of mostly historical photos and excerpts from a wide variety of sources covering the history of the valley. References are given for each excerpt if you want to track down more. In many cases the references are actually to websites which makes it easy to satisfy curiosity quickly. The last part of the book are stories from more recent history of the springs and profiles of some of the long time visitors.

The book is by no means particularly "professionally" done containing a number of minor typos and editing errors. Clearly it is a labor of love by someone passionate about the area. The printing itself though is quite high quality and the reproduction of historical photos also quite well done. Because it dedicates a lot of space to the nice photos and uses a rather large font the total amount of text isn't as much as you might expect from the page count. Clearly a lot of research, effort and passion went into it and I like it despite the occasionally quirky layout or editing. While much of the text is not original (collected from other sources) it is certainly a great resource to have so much about the area collected in one volume.

Link below to the author's thread on the Saline Valley forums has instructions on how to purchase as well as the full table of contents.

I agree with your observations about the book.

There was a comment about the book suggesting it was based on many of Digonnet's books. Digonnet has always been very thorough and not really able to judge that comment-I gathered the book was less story telling and more "binding" the documents together. @DVexile, can you comment on that comment?

It is not even remotely like a Digonnet book at all. Totally different things and Digonnet is all original content while indeed this one is much more a collection of other sources.

Now the cover design is quite reminiscent of recent Digonnet covers and perhaps that was what someone was referring to!

I have commented about the similarities between cover photography chosen for the respective books.

That makes more sense just based on the author's comments.

It also seems like this would be a great accompaniment to the Digonnet books because of the documents/pictures.

Does anyone know if the Wildrose charcoal kilns were affected by the recent earthquakes?
Thinking about heading up there for the Perseids meteor shower next month.

The park service says they’ve surveyed all their paved roads with no damage except some rock falls now cleared. Checking the dirt roads now which they say may take a few days.

I’d be surprised if anything happened to the kilns. Though to be fair it is probably the most shaking they’ve experienced before. They were built five years after the big Lone Pine quake in 1872.

If anything is wrong with the road or the kilns it should show up on their alerts page in the next day or two:

I forgot all about Panamint City, we drove (winched) up there in about 2000 I think, right before they closed Surprise Canyon.
I'm sure some old hot springs are going to come back and visa versa.
We were just a few hundred feet in an old mineshaft a few weeks ago, makes you think about what could have happened.

Someone went out to the springs in Saline and appears sources/flows unaffected by the quake (they were dramatically affected by a smaller more local quake more than a decade ago and took a year or so to recover that time).

No word on Panamint City as yet - it takes a fair bit more effort to get to.

Yes. I consider these as probably some of the most authoritative books.

Saw a video on FB of Devils Hole during one of the earthquakes. Can't find it to share but it was very cool to watch. Reports are no pupfish were effected.
