Ghost Towns & Desert Atlas is worthwhile too. It's not comprehensive but gives you and idea of what's in the various towns and where they are. There's a lot more out there than I remembered (I've done very little exploration in NV other than the obvious places).

Yes! I am aware of Northern NV and Southern NV Ghost Town & Desert Atlas varieties and they are both worth while.

I'm amazed by all that's there to explore. I mean you think of Nevada as a fairly barren state with not a whole lot to do. I think it's been a couple/three years since the state started their advertising campaign focusing on places with outdoor activities-that's about the time I started looking at some of the places to visit but never really spent a lot of time at it. Been to a few of the old towns and out to Great Basin but not a lot in between.

This kind of shit just sets me off.
"Why can't I go camping in the middle of nowhere? That's the ultimate "social distancing!"
Yeah, you and 500 other hotrod city slickers had the same idea. Did you bring enough water for yourself and your riders? Did you plan for the walk out if/when you got stuck? Did you have proper recovery gear? Did you stay on marked trails? Pack in, pack out? Leave no trace? These are the kinds of people that not only jeopardize our safe, designated offroading routes, but put others/recovery/rescue/emt at risk to go save their dumb asses during these times with everything else. Don't even get me started on the trash they leave behind, and how they don't know how to put a campfire out properly. UGH :angrygirl::annoyed:

Living in SoCal we see the same people in the mountains when it snows. They pull off the side of a mountain road (illegally) and play in the snow and just cover their trash up with snow. Sledding off into the highway. No respect for anyone else. Causing traffic jams because they won’t pay the 6 dollars to use the snow play area designated by the state.

Just got back from a week spent driving from the Mojave to Moab on mostly back roads.

There is SO MUCH used toilet paper blowing around our deserts. It just makes me want to cry.

Scenic hiking trail? Half buried shit at every switchback.

Established campsite? Half buried shit next to the tent pad.

Pit toilet? Literally shit on the floor next to the commode.

It takes a shockingly low percentage of assholes to ruin our lands.

I agree. I think a lot more areas should force and enforce a rule requiring people to bring a toilet or wag bags. The Maze in Canyonlands does.

A lot of parks require backpackers/climbers to bring shit tubes (basically a piece of sewer pipe to put the poop in). No more free space pooping.

Yep. If you want to climb Shasta ya' gonna pack out your poop. I am sure other areas are similar in those requirements. And for good reason.

Yeah the Maze was the ONLY place I didn't see shit, TP, graffiti, and illegal tire tracks. Canyonlands is becoming my favorite place (but don't tell anyone!)

Perhaps more places should start using permit systems... they add some degree of accountability that I think fosters greater responsibility among visitors, and can help keep numbers down overall. I remember back when I lived in CO, they were even considering permits for the whole Crested Butte area... which is just USFS land. I love that place, but summers were becoming a literal shitshow anywhere near the trails and camps.

Or maybe we should start teaching kids in school that's it's not okay to litter and shit on our public lands!

But back to reality, what would you think if you had to get a permit online before cruising into DV?

I would support permits if done well in DV, even if it meant I may not be able to go where I wanted when I wanted. This could be similar to backpacking permits. Canyonlands was one of the only pristine “wilderness” experiences in a national park you can drive to. There are still pristine backpacking areas in national parks, but even those are fewer.

The idea behind limiting the over use of the resources seems like a great idea but it just leads to less access.

Yosemite only hands out 225 permits for Half Dome a day. You might get one same day but not likely-It's a surprisingly popular hike. Zion is the same way except you may not enter Canyon Drive except on a shuttle and you need a ticket...

I'm glad I was able to do HD before the permits kicked in.

Permits also take any spontaneity in travel away.
