It’s like poachers. I have nothing against hunting but to see rotting carcasses that were clearly dropped and left where they stood? Unacceptable.

Interviewed by an LA Times reporter at Zabriske just before the hike down Golden Canyon that killed him. No doubt that human interest piece just got a lot darker than the dude who ran a mile in a Darth Vader outfit there a few days ago.

I think most here are like me and once you've gone you will always have the desire to return. I've had some major life changes and planning for the future has changed the frequency I've been able to head out. Very much missing DV. Found this to savor those runs with friends to special places.

    Thank you.
Not challenges. Got engaged and still wrapping up my BSN. Becoming a step-father is a great life change. Already took the 8yr old to DV. I guess the challenge with kids these days is getting them off the screens.

Congrats on the engagement and their will be plenty of work available when you finish the BSN. As far as getting kids away from phones, computers, Playstations and such just set a time after school when all that shit gets turned off. Even if it's only 30 minutes. Good luck. lol

Right on! I dated a gal with a 10yo for several years. First thing, signed him up for soccer--did not ask. We did a number of camping trips and other outdoorsy stuff. Also, claimed a night--did models and read books (his choosing), movies. That kind of stuff. Sadly, didn't work out but I am grateful for the experience.

Thank you for the insights. We can only do our best.

Another nice series on DV. Nine parts in total but here's the first. The videographer is mellow and has facts I had either forgotten or didn't even know about.

A friend of mine sent me something similar for a road here in my area. Turns out to come with some history as well. Made for Portola Valley and definitely that same mellow narration and folksy feel--which works well for things like these.

    MNP is on fire again!

Haven't made it out to the desert lately... easy to assume everything is the same out there, but unfortunately it's not: the New York mountains in Mojave National Preserve are ablaze, currently reported at 77k acres; approaching twice the size of the catastrophic Dome fire of 2020. Looks like everything is toast from the Mojave Road just past Rock Springs... up to and including Vanderbilt, and everything north and east to the state line. Holy shit.

I'll count myself lucky that I got to spend a day exploring some of this region last year. The impetuous for that trip seems worth highlighting here: thanks to a suggestion by @dman100, I was out there planting Joshua tree seedlings at a NPS volunteer event, in the Dome Fire burn scar.

Sheesh, that's a lot of virtue-flexing and shameless self-promotion. But here's something more useful: Unless the new fire changes their plans, there is another Joshua Tree reforestation volunteer program this year, Oct 6 to Nov 12 (weekends only this year). That page is out of date, but hopefully it's okay to share the sign-up for this year's event, here.

And here, I'm stealing their logo too, in hopes more people will see the post.

Sometimes I wonder if the installation of a couple of small cell towers might not prevent this from happening.

Sometimes I wonder if our modern conveniences of life are slowly eroding the core tenants of survival of the fittest. Actually, I don't wonder that. I know that for a fact. The human IQ has been on a decline for a long time. As harsh as it is, I think we need less safety features and let Darwinism take its course.

They most definitively are. Everything from all the nanny sensors in the new vehicles making people worse drivers, all the way back to indoor plumbing and the light switch.

While I am not advocating to do away with plumbing and lights, they were the start of man creating an artificial environment to live in. While a lot of people can live with technology and continue to understand and respect nature, too many have become disconnected from the reality of nature - protected from Darwinism, so to speak.

There are a small percentage of "city folks" that seem to think the world is an easy place, and everything just rosy and soft. Then they go outside their enviornment and realize that they are completely "lost". These guys made the mistake of depending on nothing but GPS in an area that they obviously have never been. Doesn't sound like preperations were made a priority. Being away from the easy life is no joke...especially remote areas. But....it always happens....Darwinism at it's finest.
