Certainly cheaper to try and rig something yourself which also usually gives you a fair bit of flexibility in pitching the shade. Something like an ARB awning sets up and takes down real quick of course which is nice if you move frequently or what to set up for a quick lunch spot. I've got a fiamma which is wicked expensive but we like the fast setup and takedown for lunch spots. When solo though I usually just stop for lunch with the back of the truck pointed north and then the tailgate is a nice shady place to sit.

Sounds like a plan. Gonna try something cheaper first and lookout for a slightly used roof rack awning for those quick stops

    Death Valley 2018: Day 4
You Don't See This Every Day

... around 1:00am, the wind got significantly colder, and we started
to feel moisture in the air. We didn't realize it at the time as
we zipped up the remaining windows, but the moisture we were feeling was snow...

So yeah - we went to Death Valley to escape the cold, and we got snowed on.

You don't see that every day.

Sorry, gotta post this amazing pic here in the DV thread...photography is not only about the right skills and eye but time and place. You got a winner in the following shot.

Yep, @turbodb has a good eye, makes me a little jealous when I see good compositions & lighting & atmosphere in a photo like that.

    Thanks both.

On the one hand, I feel like, "if you take enough pictures, you get a few good ones." This has always really been (and continues to be) how I approach photography. Esp. when I look at folks like @DVexile, @Crom, and a bunch of other folks on here.

I just recently got a dSLR to start taking pics - before that, I was a "everything with the cellphone" guy. As weird as it sounds to say this, I think that might have been a good thing in helping compositions - I couldn't really zoom or anything, so I had to frame everything in the default frame of the phone. I'm hoping I don't lose some of that with the more powerful setup!

That's funny - when we were there, we thought about a fire and decided against it. I looked at the bulk of that chimney and thought, "man, would take a lot of heat to get that thing working right!" Interesting to hear your experience matched that.

I think that's because the cabin is pretty well sealed all things considered. It won't make up enough air without a large fire.

For photography I think the best site around is http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ It is Canon specific for the gear but the information is pretty universal.

I won't stay in any of the cabins. I'd rather freeze to death than end up with hauntavirus.

Ah a Canon shooter. I still have my AE-1 program from 3rd grade. Keep shooting. Yes more pictures taken will allow for more keepers but once you learn about the technical aspects you can begin to see composition without a camera in your hand. Then you'll know when you want to pick it up. POTN is a great resource.

As mentioned, some Canon service centers have classes and some are free!

That's not weird at all. Take lots of pictures. Some classes in photography make you start with a minimalist camera, a point and shoot. Then you move up and use one lens. Then you start adding frills & more lenses.

If you want to feel like a true Photography Putz find some photos Ansel Adams did with a pinhole camera.

What is the name of the snake that imitates the rattlesnake sound, has a fake rattler on its tail? Bull snake? Gopher snake?

Only picture I have of a rattler I met with is from Arizona. I stepped out of the trailer walked a few steps, then heard the rattle. Dog was outside at the time, and they totally ignored each other.

    Death Valley 2018: Day 5 & 6
    Eventful Trip Home

...Now, an astute reader may remember that on our way to Beatty from
the northeast, we nearly ran out of gas. Not to be outdone
coming from the southwest, the fuel light in the truck came on just as we pulled
out of Stovepipe wells - some 32 miles from Beatty...
