    Problem ....

Those who oppose it wouldn't use it anyway , but voting against it removes the option from those that would

For example, with cancer treatment... you can get to a point where the treatment isn't working any more or the patient is just tired of being sick from the treatment and says "enough". At that point the patient isn't going to get better and in some cases is in serious pain. Usually by this point, they are bed ridden. There is no hope for a cure and it would have to be up to the patient to request this, NOT the doctor.

Those who oppose smoking in restaurants wouldn't do it anyway, but voting against it removes the option from those who would.

That's apples to oranges. Smoking affects everyone in the vicinity. This only affects the person.

Actually suicide is a crime..thing is how do you punish it if they succeed?

I voted no. If one of my parents did this and I didn't know, I don't want to find them 3 weeks later in their home.

I think the reason some fight it is religious, but that's another rant.

Before I met my wife, my mother in law was very ill..was told by one doctor she'd never live to leave the hospital she was in. Not only did she do it, but had 5 more years of life..as in great quality of life years, could do anything she wanted. She would have been a candidate for the assisted suicide.

Its a tough call and I can understand not putting the burden on a doctor but if someone is suffering that badly they should have some means to just end it painlessly rather than just suffering to your inevitable death anyway. I had an uncle that died of cancer years ago and during his final days he was in so much pain he was begging some family members just to kill him. No one should have to suffer to the point of having to plead with people to kill them nor shod they have to just take it upon themselves to try and blow their brains out which is going to be much more traumatic on the family.

I think if there was true medical supervision during the actual process of doing it, such as Kevorkian did, I might have felt differently..

That said I didn't even feel right about putting my cat to sleep 2 years ago, even being told she wouldn't survive another hour.

I agree with this post ^^

Along with the faith based position vs. a secular one...there is a political component as well. (In America anyway).
With the implimentation of Obama care, unelected government bureaucrats will be making life & death decisions. I personally wouldn't want the law to allow one of these beltway pinheads to decide to off a loved one because they figured it was dignified in their opinion.

That being said atleast your cat had medical care there to put her to sleep. I feel that it is the individuals decision to make, they are the one suffering. I would hope that they told their family of their choice and would go out happy and content knowing that the family loved them and understood.

    touchè

However , I don't think taking one's own life is a parallel with giving others lung cancer

Not sure that " strawman " agrument applies . You offered a reasonable explanation for why one may or may not support this measure , and I pointed out an issue with it

I talked to the vet when I had to put down my dog. He said, something like, "This is a luxury not afforded to human beings".

Basically what he meant was, we can put an animal down in a humane way, but a human would have to suffer until it happens on it's own.

I have seen a relative die of brain cancer with absolutely awareness and only suffering. I would have liked the option to have a doctor do what the vet could do to my dog.

I think Larry would have twice as many posts if so many weren't deleted for the "O" word.
