Debadge ?

Good evening everyone. Happy New Year to you all. I just have a question about debadging. I have a 2007 Silver Prerunner that I would like to debadge. My question is do you think since it is over three years old that the paint has faded and that you will be able to tell were the badges were? I'm a little concerned. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I also want to debadge my 05, it's desert sand mica. I'm curious about this to. I'm sure the color of your truck has a lot to do with the fading of the paint, for example a red truck will fade far faster than a light colored one.

 

if you can, after words get it buffed or buff that spot out. there will be a halo where they were, but you need to use a buffer to get it out

 

mines an 07 took them off last year 2010 lol btw happy new years.... i took it out with a hair dryer and fishing line and when they were off i used rubbing alcohol it came off nice the running alcohol took off the shadow of the badge and they put a nice coat of wax over it worked out nice

 

Used the fishin line, works great. Buff and wax, wax on wax off. And if you can find some Yota factory wax use it.

Did all of my badges a couple of months ago with fishing line. Easy to do and waxed afterward. Five years old and no shadow on my impulse red.

 

Thanks everyone for your responses. How long does it take to debadge including the "Tacoma" on the driver and passenger door?

 

I debadged mine in less than an hour. This included explaining to my neighbor that I am not crazy. If there is a shadow where the badges were, paint the badges black and reinstall them in the original spots. I think blacked out badges also look good, almost as good as debadged.

 

why do you guys like to debadge? i havent considered it on mine but just curious why?

 

I debadged because I want to get rid of as much chrome as possible. I think the truck looks way better and cleaner without the emblems.

true on some trucks it does look good but i got the whole black and white thing goin on and i just hate chrome on my truck

 

if you debadge and paint it, what paint would you suggest using?

 

i used like a plastic primer and then just used rustolem turned out nice

 

Chrome isn't bad if it real. Fake plastichrome can be tough on the eyes. I'm sure everyone has seen those Trucks decked out in plastichrome....

• Window trim

• Hood deflectors

• Stick-on air scoops

• Altezza lights

• Tail light covers/guards

But at least usually the the wheels have some real chrome plating. Stock plastic chrome badging is ok in my book though, that's about it.

I've always wondered how luxury brands plate gold on to their plastic emblems, i.e. Lexus. Maybe it's not gold anymore but it use to be.

 

I blacked out my badges and it looks great. I tried the fishing line and didn't have much success, so I used a plastic putty knife. Heat the badges up a bit and its like slicing cheese.

I used plastic primer then a couple coats of black dupli-color. It takes a while to do it right. Much longer than an hour start to finish.

Couple of tips.
1. Do not touch the badges after you have painted them black unless you are 100% sure they are dry. Trust me on this. I did and screwed them up which allowed me to do them again.

2. If you are returning them to the same spot after painting, use some masking tape while they are still on to identify exactly where they go. Saves a ton of time.

Thank you all for your responses. I just debadged my tailgate and now the only thing left are the doors. I have gone out twice and just stared at it after it was completed. I can't believe it looks so much better.

 

I finished debadging today. Now, I still have some ghosting going on and where the Tacoma badges were there is dirt that will not come off. Any ideas?

 

I grew up in the 60's and 70's when chrome was "in". We don't mind it. Through the years, I've debadged several trucks and they all looked "clean". Our Tacoma has chrome and it reminds me of the good ol' days. So it's staying the way it is. Question: I saw a "Bully Chrome Plated Fender Air Vents" for sale...anyone have a photo of this installed? Thanks.
