I have a 2017 Tacoma off road double cab long bed and a 2018 4Runner red off road. The space inside 4Runner is amazing. There is so much room up front and in the second row. As for power 4Runner has more get up and go. This is mostly because the Tacoma’s max hp is in the 4000rpms. I love my taco but overall if you have to choose one the 4Runner is a better bet.
Taco does win in the technology part since it has been updated and the 4Runner is going to be 10 years old with the gen.
I’m fortunate enough to have both and I get to bounce back and forth.

Also 4Runner has more head room and electric seating if that’s something that matters to you.

I've toyed w/ the idea of trading in my 16 for a 4runner. Too bad they don't make them in manual otherwise I'd probably have picked one up for sure. :(. T4Rs are great. It's like the official cop car out here in Hawaii. I think either way you'll like the decision. Also the 4Runner w/ the 3rd seat option is pretty cool too but zero leg room for those who would sit in the 3rd row.

Unless you're dead set on having a pickup truck, get the 4Runner. The Tacoma is a good vehicle, but the 4Runner is a superior vehicle.

4Runner was a little out of my price range when I was looking, but they are absolutely awesome. If I could, I'd toss a TRD supercharger on a 4runner and kiss the MPG's goodbye.

this is true. I have an 04 GX 460 and I live in Oklahoma and windy cross winds blow it around and makes it a more fight to drive. That said it is nice truck and our 3rd vehicle that i am getting ready to trade in on new 3rd vehicle to replace it. Had it since new with 109k miles on it. Cant say nothing but good things about it. I know not a 4runner but to me same thing it just has taller roof and v8. Im also trading in my 16 Colorado for an 18 Tacoma trd Or Dbcb sb.

When Softex Leather is brought up, isn't that just a fancy word for Vinyl? I had "leatherette" seats in my BMW once. Never again. So bad in summer, they were basically plastic. Unless Toyota has much better quality man made leather.

The Softex steering wheel in my Rav4 rental was absolutely horrible.

These softex seats are actually pretty nice, even in the very cold or very hot temps. I’ve had fake leather and real leather in the past, I think I like this softex best so far.

My 4runner is way better in over all fit, finish and quality. If you’re thinking about taking too much of a loss to trade your Tacoma for a 4runner, give it a try first. I was thinking along those lines but decided to just see what the dealer would do, and ended up not losing much at all. Dealers want these 1-2 year old trade ins, they make more off them than you think! My used truck was listed for way more than I paid for it new!

Another option for those who want a 4runner but need truck duties that a trailer won’t do well, why not find an old beater truck on CL for cheap? At least the dents and scratches won’t bother you!

I stayed with the 4th Gen T4R, 4.7l. 4.7 has their own set of problems but towing it's better than a 4.0. Any T4R with a 4.0 you get a ClassIII hitch and no external trans cooler. 4.7l is same as the Tacoma, ClassIV hitch and auxilliary trans cooler, 130A alternator.

I like the new T4R package that has the manual transfer case. The '07 and '08 4.7l T4R's (fulltime 4WD) are nice, lot of options for drives. Have to exercise the 4LO and CDL often. I like the 4th gen Limiteds for the factory leather.
