you can do pretty good mpg wise as long as you stay out of boost. that kicks in around 1700 rpm 70 mph. driving around 75 mph and mpg would average around 18 mpg. I would of loved to had this motor in the tacoma.

I have a vac/boost gauge; how are you going to verify boost without a gauge?

I only hear the blower whine on boost. I only hear the normal rattles and such on vacuum.

    Downshifting won't help?
I haven't towed but I've hauled quite a bit of weight up Cuesta grade in San Luis obispo ca and when dropped in 4, I'm doing 75 with no boost.

Ya know what, I just might..... The ford guys know my truck after leaving 150 or so feet of rubber in front of their shop.

But I'll drive an ecoboost this week for fun!

So I'll try to chip in. I've decided I'm making too quick a decision on my Tacoma right now. I'm going to wait at least until the 2015 Fords have been around a bit before I'll buy anything, and if I buy anything it'll be an F150 or a Dodge. I'll only buy the Dodge in diesel and only if they are better at staying in one piece than the gas jobs. The Ecoboost is gods gasoline job gift to mankind. They are not always fuel efficient, and not a V8, but they haul ass compared to everything else in the class. In fact, the only thing Chevy can try to claim against an Ecoboost is that there 5.3 L is more fuel efficient on hiway, which is an f-ing joke because the 5.3 L has a far weaker powerband.

I know for a fact the Tacoma stays in boost at 65 mph at 2500-3000 rpm. My AFR jumps down and I can hear the difference of the S/C being in boost. That is what is causing my shitty mileage. I'm confused because from what I've read this is happening to some trucks with the S/C and not others. I'd get the valve looked at but my local Toyota doesn't have a clue about this sort of stuff and they're just as likely to make the problem worse rather than fix it.

I sorta miss full sized trucks, since I drive one to work everyday I want to own one again. Also premium gas is nearly six dollars now a gallon in Canada, so I'm about ready to hop off that train. I dunno what I'll do, but thanks for all the replies/opinions guys.

Can you deal with it for a few years to see if Toyota brings a diesel to the Tacoma? Frontier and Colorado will have one sooner but :puke:

Honestly, this was my first Toyota and unless they came out with a Diesel Tacoma with modern options I won't be interested in going with them again.

My ex-wife drives a chevy, and she was an item with the dealership sales manager for a while, so I'd prefer to stay away from there for now.

The Tundra is 6-10 K more expensive in Canada then any other full sized truck, and not worth that money in my opinion. I bet when they put a Cummins in it, that cost will go to well above 60 K in Canada. I'm not putting 60K into a 1/2 ton, period.

My friend's dad just bought a Ram ecodiesel and already has it in the dealership for unknown repairs. Definitely unproven, but keep running those 28 MPG HWY estimated mileage for reg cab 2wd commercials, Ram.

    Not too crazy about ecoboosts.

Consider a real diesel like a 06-10 Cummins or Duramax, why even deal with the unproven junk like the ecodiesel?

I towed back a full size SUV from Vegas a few weeks back with my dads 05 Sierra diesel. It hit 105-114 degrees in Utah, Arizona, and Nevada and was damn hot everywhere else too. AC on constantly, never went below 5th (top gear) unless there was roadwork, and still was getting 15+ mpg. It does actually feel like theres nothing back there, the ride only gets smoother when trailer is loaded up. This was a business trip (sort of) but it was nothing but pleasure enjoying scenery and have a nice time with my wife. You just cant do this type of thing in a "compact" truck. BTW, the trailer loaded scaled 8000 pounds.

And before anybody says a 3/4 ton diesel is "too big" blah blah blah. A 2010 Sierra extended cab 6 1/2 foot bed is about as long as a DCLB Tacoma.

I'm doing the same exact thing - waiting for a few months for the '15 F-150 to come out and then checking out all the options. I too miss the full-size space and capabilities, and the Tundra does nothing for me. I love the idea of the EcoBoost (and even the new 2.7L), but I think for longevity's sake, I'd lean towards a 5.0, especially if it can get 22-24 mpg highway.

A sierra heavy duty may be just as long but the Tacoma turns a whole lot better. 3/4 and 1 tons are harsh riding and not what I'm looking for in a personal vehicle. I have a 2014 Ram 2500 for work and I'd never own one personally, it's basically a road tank. Plus you pay an arm and a leg for a fairly basic truck once you tack the diesel option on it. No thanks, heavy duties are for real farm/construction use, not towing around my dinky little trailer.

The Ecoboost is a great setup. Those that hate it tend to be guys who'd never buy a Ford for this reason or that.

EDIT: Just a heads up, the price of a 06-10 used diesel around here is anywhere from 25-40 K. If I want a low mileage one than the number will be in the high 30's. I can get a brand new ford with 5 years of warranty for that price.

Yeah sorry :p. We recently had to deal with her reneging on returning a bunch of money to me. To say I'm a bit sour and verbal right now would be an understatement.

not a problem, but do me a favor, take it off line, if you have kids and they find this, it will embarrass them to no end. And things said online in public forums can come back and haunt you.

If you what, we can chat off line at hektind@bestweb.net

I have to agree with some other people on here. You cannot know when you are in boost unless you have a gauge. I can hear the whine of the s/c but not in boost, just low vacuum. As well, my AFR drops on acceleration but I am not in boost.
You are making assumptions that may be incorrect. You are right in saying gas mileage is poor towing, but it also sucks without the s/c.

True enough, maybe I'll throw the gauge on there. Maybe I'll just trade it in this fall. We'll see. I just talked with the fiance and she kind of likes the loaded up dodge models, so if she's willing to get rid of her Sonata for a Ram then I can have the best of both worlds.

Don't worry, we had no kids. I'll clean it up a bit. Far worse things have been said but you're right, it was a bit much to post online even if it's true ;)
