I used that same trick back in the day to load and unload my dirt bike. Putting the rear wheels in a ditch lowered the tailgate.

Fine print should read: "We take the oil from the last guy, pour it through an old dirty sock to filter out metal bits, and then fill your motor back up! Good as new!"

My dad taught his girl how to work on all the household vehicles while still in grade school. Once I got my learners permit (sometime during the stone age) he let me drive his 'baby', a '75 Nova. I got my first job with that car. I have a vivid memory of trying to change out the water pump in that car by myself and becoming so frustrated that I couldn't hold it steady enough to get that 2nd bolt in, that I started to cry.

The idea of taking any vehicle I have ever driven in to get the oil changed has never once crossed my mind. My dad would have rolled over in his grave! He taught me to use only the best tools and the best fluids to keep whatever you're driving lasting as long as possible. It was Mobil 1 then, and it's Mobil 1 now, and currently, I'm very happy with K&N's HP-1002 filter. That little nut on top is very handy! :D

I recycle empty beer cans to catch the oil. Need the solo cups for beer pong.

An empty water bottle fits perfect in there to catch any oil that drains from the filter.

Of course not. I've been changing oil for 40 years. As I said in my post, fiscally speaking there is no way anyone can beat the price. DIY oil change costs almost 3x the money so I let the dealer do it.

My last 2 Oil Changes were pretty good on price, there was a $12 mail in rebate for Mobil 1, so it was under $20 for Oil, a Toyota Filter, and a little of my time.

I've never paid someone or had someone change the oil in any vehicle I've ever owned or been responsible for.

For me it's not about the money. I would rather do it myself so I know it was done exactly how I want it to be done with the products I picked. It's important to me and no offense to the "techs" but there is no way it's as important to them.

I call it piece of mind.

More dads needed to have raised more women like you. LOL Not afraid to get their hands dirty and fix things themselves.

I find the 2nd Gen to be one of the easiest vehicles to change the oil on. Filter is up high, has it's own little drain, oil drain plug easily accessed, it's a truck so you don't have to jack it up to get underneath. And your done. Store old oil for recycle.

Person that put the oil filter upside down was a jack ass should of left it at the bottom so the oil doesn't poor all over the engine.

Loosen the filter first so it can drain, have the tube connected to the drain hole going into the drain pan. Now go underneath and drain the oil into said pan, by this time the filter should be nearly empty.

HAH! I missed that. A seller apparently mistook the "like new" (damaged packaging or something) from the "used", I hope!

I'm constantly checking ebay and Amazon for the best deals; one's usually outdoing the other at some point. I got my last bundle of those filters from Amazon for about $9.50 apiece. Better than FRAM! I learned a bit more about quality filters from this guy's site here:
    http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/opinions.html

Very thorough articles. It hasn't been updated since '08, apparently, but likely little has changed.

Yeah that what I do. It makes more work for the person doing the oil change. Hurt like hell when the motor warm and u trying to get that stupid hose on the drain fitting. If they only put it under the truck u could do it all at once.
