What do you think is reasonable offer? KB has a range of $40k-$43k

I'd start real low. Get to their bottom price and walk out the door. Trucks aren't selling like they used to be. I'd try to get to 40-41, I'd start at 38

I am a horrible person to ask because I've never bought used. I buy new and keep my vehicles a long time. Shortest length I have owned is 7 years and I only sold it because we started having kids and needed 4 seats (I had a Ford Ranger that only had two seats and back then they sold them without any space behind the front seats). Longest is 20 years.

With that said, knowing it is a dealer sale, it is likely a trade-in and they likely low balled the guy. He took it for convenience reasons, no private resale, etc. And now they are trying to get top dollar.

Agree with @Couesfanatic. Start upper 30's and aim for $40-41.

Only risk with negotiating is someone willing to pay asking price. When you negotiate, simply be ready to close the deal when you hit a number you can live with.

With that said, do you know what the $6k of OEM upgrades are? That stuff is usually way overinflated on price, like blackout package probably costs them $25 but they charge $400 for it. And in 2022 they were adding in all sorts for OEM upgrades because of vehicle shortages.

How long has it been posted for? People are usually fairly unlikely to drop that much with private sales.

Also, low milage tacomas seem to sell quickly with private sales from my experience

You could probably get him to 42-43K, doubt he goes lower than that unless it sits unsold. I'd compare that to what else is out there with a similar year and mileage and see if thats competitive in your area.

Yeah, I think it's pretty appropriately priced. It's one of the most loaded Tacomas I've seen.

Grab that 22 before 3rd Gen-itist really takes off!

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I drive a 17 for work and own a 20 personally. IMO the extra features and newness of a newer truck was absolutely worth paying more to me, 2020+ models had a number of interior improvements that I do miss in the work truck. The OEM LED headlights are also a massive improvement of OEM halogens, I can attest to that personally and there's also a lot of threads here where the OEM LEDs are widely agreed to be the best option for headlight performance that also won't leak water or blind other drivers. Drive each at night and you'll see the difference for sure.

The newer one is also more worth getting if you plan to keep for longer, those quality of life improvements will have more worth to you the longer you have the truck for.

Is the 17 4wd? I can't see if there is a 4x4 decal on the bed or a 4wd shift knob on the dash. I'm always suspicious of a truck being a 2wd Offroad if the price on one seems to be much lower than I'd usually expect.

    You know a lot, Buck.

    OP,

I'm not an OR fan nor a fan of white...but, the 2022 has all you need.

Get a Tune and you're set.

Oh...if you can budget for it, make that move!

The 2022 looks nicer on the exterior, interior has much more comforts (including the biggest one, CarPlay), and will last you a longer time. The 2017 has low miles for the year but that's a 7-8 year old truck. The 2022 is going to last longer and I think the comforts will help you enjoy it more.

Why only these 2 to choose from? My local dealer has new 23's still avail. For me the 17 is too old but I wouldnt pay new truck costs for a newer 1 either. I would take a deeper look around. Be patient, it will come.

    This and that
    Sheesh.
I would go with the more current, but it might have a bunch of things you don’t need and or want. Really I would keep looking and figure out exactly what you want. The biggest problem you will have with that white truck is it will peel.

Spring for the 22 if you can. Really comes down to what you are comfortable paying. Warranty is nice and they should come down on price.

Either buy the 2017 or a brand new ‘24 for less than the used ‘22.

Thanks everyone for your input! I thing because of cost, I am considering the 17, I will offer something low like $27k, see what they respond with. Few questions:

    1. Some talk on here about transmissions and leaky engines, how do I check for that when I look at it? Also what should I ask them about those things or have them confirm with me with their mechanics?

    2. Where do you get your Toyota accessories from? I would replace the grill, get a lift, and add tires to it, I also want to get a bed cover as well. Any recommendations on where to get those from? It's at a Toyota dealer so I am going to see how much they will charge me for the lift and tires.

Lol, don't expect the selling dealer to crawl underneath the truck to point out any leaks or issues. If you are able, take it to an independent shop that does pre-purchase inspections. The timing chain cover is the most likely issue you will find on the 2017. But I'm not sure what transmission leak you are referring to?
