6cyl prerunners are nice trucks. Everyone on here is going to tell you that you need a 4x4, but they're both tacos in the end, 2wd or 4wd. It all depends on what you plan to use the truck for

From 22 - 32 i stripped down and built up 5 Jeeps, have gone extreme 4x4'ing, killed engines, transfer cases, bearings, etc, mud, dirt, dust, engine fires, etc. I somehow burned out the 4x4 in my brain. I don't need 4x4 anymore. the last 4x4 was a duece and a 1/2, if i ever go back, i'll get one of those.

    4x2 is fine with me

Around here in VA Tacomas and 90's through 2006 ish chevys are about all you'll see being driven 200+ miles and people beat the shit out of them around here.

OP, Go with the Tacoma because I haven't heard of many new chevy motors (2007-recent motors) holding up like these tacomas.
Theres been 4 guys at my work that have all had trouble with 2007-2011 chevy motors burning tons of oil and one having to be reringed at 60K.

IIRC 5 lugs only come with the 2.7, unless you find the X Runner version. I think those are v6 with 18" wheels and body flares and stuff to be more like a 'street truck'.

    AC = access cab.

I regularly run 19-20mpg futzing around town, but over 25 on the (flat) roads at legal limits running for extended periods, like from here to Miami.

Collected and painted a set of spare wheels, ebay SS trim rings, 235x75 tires (215 is OE). Not everyones cup of tea. The hip crowd would like it more if I tossed the trim rings and blacked the wheels. Don't care. I'm just glad I don't need a hip replacement. Yet. :D

I almost bought a used F250 4x4 extended cab but couldn't agree on price (was only 2k more than the taco), thank god, and bought my Tacoma a few weeks later. For me while they have a lot of appeal I don't think a full size truck is a good choice unless you're towing regularly. I live in the city so it's particularly important for me to be able to easily find parking and negotiate narrow streets. My dad has had an F150 for less than 2 years and already is looking to get the Colorado ZR1 or a Tacoma TRD, and he leaves in Arizona where it's wide open. I mostly tow a 6x10 box trailer and even when its loaded with gear and three motorcycles the Taco handles it fine, even on hills if you put it in 4 instead of leaving it in D. Now when we were towing a 30 foot trailer with 6 motorcycles in it and three peoples gear we used my brothers F350 diesel and it was absolutely fantastic. Just leave it on cruse control and it never slows down!

Something i have always wondered about my base model truck, since you have one too, are the fog light wiring there, just need to get lights and a switch?

I basically have the same truck, just matched front bumper, matched grill, and i'll try to post a picture.

you couldnt pay me to buy a chevy truck after my 2001 2500hd experience. I have also done recent test drives of GM's highest quality GMC denali 1500 and was VERY underwelmed, super plasticy super shitty inside, a mid grade F150 had more features and had a much better interior.

If i needed a full size truck, f150 is what i would be looking at.

I recently bought my Tacoma back in the spring when I traded in a 2011 Silverado that I put 185k on. Great truck, only repairs I ever did were the front wheel bearings. Other than that just fluids and brakes.

If you need a full size truck the Chevy is a great choice. For me, I need the capacity of a FS truck once a year on average and it doesn’t make sense rolling around with a huge truck every day to accommodate rare occasions. In my eyes I benefit from the Tacoma’s smaller turning radius and mpgs everyday. When I trade it in 3 years from now with 200k, it will be worth several thousand more than the Chevy I didn’t buy.

That’s interesting. I’ve had both a 2015 Silverado LTZ (every optioned as well) and a 2015 F150 Lariat 502a (highest spec of a Lariat) and much preferred the soft touch plastic in the Silverado. I did like my ford better, but only for the twin panel panoramic moonroof. That was a show stopper, never should’ve traded either of those trucks off.

I’m not a big fan of the Chevy v6. You should be able to get a 5.3 V8 crew cab for similar money to the Tacoma.

Both trucks should last 120k plus. We have a GMC Yukon with 140k and I fully expect to keep it for another year or so. The GMC has required more repairs than any Toyota I have owned, however.

Unless you need to extra room or cargo capacity, go Tacoma. You will be happier in the long run.

    back to bone stock.
we have several Silverado trucks in our fleet. nothing gets beaten on more than our work trucks. mine never had a hiccup..and i drove the crap out of that thing. picked it up with 38 miles and handed it off with 140,000. i had to give it up since a newer engineer needed the truck more than i did..i got a Chevy Malibu in trade..

    that move hurt.

    Too few to list.
I'd say it would depend on your usage and needs. It is nice having more room though with the full size Silverado. I'd get the V8 though because cost between a used 6 and 8 is minimal. Quick search easily found a 2015 crew cab V8 auto with 27K miles for $26K at a dealership. MPG is rated 18-24 which is good for a V8. I actually own a K1500 when Silverado was just a trim. Neither one of my Tacoma's can get 24 mpgs on the highway. 4cyl averages out to about 21 mixed and 6cyl is about 17.

I have yet to understand the logic in engines? I purchased the 4cy as i needed a truck and i wanted great MPG. Twice the engine get just as good mpg, HOW? crazy! Here is what i also don't understand, why can't i have the Rav4 engine? 23 city / 30 highway
