Ive had my Prerunner for 5 years now and i regret not getting the 4x4 option. So 4x4 is the way to go.

If I'm driving at sandy's and find you stuck I will gladly pull you out with my 4x4. I would never let you live it down though :). You'll want the 4x4. You can't imagine how many times the guys are pulling people out of the crap whenever they go to Sandy's. At least once per trip and every time the person got stuck because they didn't have 4x4. I barely ever go off-road because I don't have much time but I do like knowing I have it should I get the opportunity to go.

BTW, get to know the TW Hawaii community. Great group of guys. If it will help convince your dad, they'll watch out for you off road and won't let ya get stuck and advise you against doing something he's worried about.

I vote for 4wd with the TRD. Seriously, a locked prerunner will get you a lot of places. I surprise people all the time. But that 1 time you're alone in the woods, and you do get stuck. Well it sucks. But I push the limits, I know what I can and can't do

There is a lot of prerunner regret on Tacoma World and little-to-no 4x4 regret. Hold out for 4 wheel drive.

Go with the 4x4. Look at it this way, when you do something stupid at least you may be able to get out of it with a 4 wheel drive

If you get the 2.7 4 cylinder 4x4 you can probably get better mpg s than v6 prerunner

PreRunner, save the money if you don't plan to do serious wheeling.

I also won't be doing any serious wheeling. I might go through some light sand but thats it. I like the TRD OR package because of all the added bells and whistles which I will be able to get with the pre runner, and the rear locker which will suffice to my off road needs as far as I can see. Although the 4x4 is really awesome, I don't think I can justify spending an extra three grand for something ill maybe use a couple times. Especially as a high school student who is graduating in the next couple years, I need the money. When I graduate ill sell it and when I move to my college ill switch to 4x4 to join the big boys.
Also I heard with your rear locked you can do some mean donuts

4x4, better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

The 4x4 will cost a bit more but will also have a higher trade in or resale value.

Lower your tires to 10 psi whenever you play in the sand and you'll be fine. Get some wide tires without reall aggressive tread and you'll do even better. Sand driving isn't about digging, it's about floating. We have sugar sand at some spots in the woods where I wheel. The other day there was a lifted jeep followin me, she's on aired up 35 m/t's. She got stuck in the sand and had to put it in 4wd. While I was at 12psi and was going in circles around her haha

Might as well get the 4x4 now. For whatever reason, most people tend to accrue the opposite of wealth during the college years.

I missed the Kauai part. 2wd. Not a lot of wheeling there right? He would never use it. I took my rental van down some of their trails. Dry season tho.
