Has anyone out there attempted to modify a decked system to fit in a 1st Gen Tacoma?

I have an '02 with 6' bed that I am thinking about attempting it on. But want to see if anyone has been down this road and has knowledge to share?

Here is an example of a guy doing it for a 06 Tundra. Came out pretty clean.
    https://youtu.be/YunCaoRYFIQ

Biggest thing I am looking for info on is what drawer system I should get. The guy in the video used a drawer from a Ford F250.

You need to find one that has one skinnier drawer because of the width between the wheel wells. The full size ones won’t work. This could be from any smaller pickup, van, even jeep gladiator.

Yes I know. Less than ideal. It’s all good though.

I’ve been watching for a cheap used one to pop up for about a year with no luck. They’re just too expensive to start cutting apart for an unknown fit. I definitely think it’s doable though.

Same here.. I found a short bed one for $800 recently, don’t know if that would work for you.

I know if I get the right size, it will work.. it’s not difficult to trim and make it fit. I just wonder if anyone has done it for a 1st gen taco and can share what drawer system fits best.

For instance..idk if the 2nd-4th gen is narrower vs. wider (side to side) than the gen 1. Or if it has enough clearance over the wheel wells. Making a different model a better option for fitting.

Would love to know too. WeatherGuard makes something called a PackRat that’s the more industrial metal version of the Decked boxes, but it weighs far too much to be used in these trucks.

I looked up all the part numbers for all of the narrower width trucks and the only differences were the top (deck pieces). Obviously this was just for the ones in the 6ft range. If you go shortbed or super long bed it's different.

If you know the inside width of your bed, you can compare it with the inside width of other trucks to figure out which will fit best. I'm pretty sure the 1st gen tacoma bed is wider inside than the 2nd gen though. Bedrail inside width is the same, but the 2nd gens have straight sides and the 1st gens go further out under the bed rails. You'd want to find one for a truck that has that same style bed as a 1st gen in this regard.

Where did you look up the narrow width truck part numbers? In list form?

    https://decked.com/pages/technical-specs#midsize-trucks

I can't seem to find the documents I found before with the specifics for each vehicle. However, you can see that they list all the midsize trucks in the same category with same dimensions (other than length for short vs. long).

This is the packrat system that I'm running. Found it on craigslist for $300.00, but I think it also weighs close to 300lbs empty. I have thought about switching to a decked system like you're wanting as well. Took me a long time to get my ride height where I wanted it, so I'm leaving it alone. This could easily be covered, and act like a sub-floor, but I'm getting lazy.
The drawer is very easy to open and close, but I guess it depends on what you want. I’m the type of person that “sometimes” money doesn’t mean a damn thing to me. If it’s what I want, I’m getting it. If they made the decked kit for the first gen’s, that’s what I would have.

The Mid size Long bed fits. I made some brackets to bolt to the floor to mount the front and the rear attaches to the stock tie down hooks.

PM if you want a set of brackets.

Can you remove the side pieces to get stuff in and out of that space between the bedside and drawer system?

Up front there isn't access without pulling the entire deck or 1/2 of it off.

The rears have the tubs in the corners that still work.

I was going to install a 3-4" deck plate to access the front corners for straps or other soft goods.

Yea that's a lot of useful space. A deck plate or modifying the sides to flip up or something would be good

I’m buying a 99 single cab and joined this forum to find out about how people did a drawer system. Has anyone come across a blueprint for a drawer system you can build out of wood?
