I managed to dump about 1/3 of a bottle of Goo Gone on my driver's seat cushion. It got down into the foam and now the interior of the truck reeks. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell short of replacing the seat?

I doubt there is gonna be any good suggestions. Any time the truck sits in heat, or you fart you will smell that smell again.

Maybe sprinkle some baking soda in there and let it sit for a while? Or put a container of it under the seat.

Might absorb some of the odor.

I did the same thing in my wife's car last year. The smell never went away. Especially when it would heat up from the sun. Luckily I found the exact match seat (RAV4) on www.car-part.com for cheap and swapped it out. You should be able to find a replacement for your 2nd gen.

Already tried that, it doesn't seem to be helping.

Thanks for the link. I figured this was my only good option but thought I'd ask before I bit the bullet.

DRP6833, it might be a good excuse to let a competent detailer have a go at your driver's seat. May as well him do the entire interior as well, while he's at it. Good luck.

I'd suggest that you remove the seat from the truck and steam it. Shampoo the carpet and whatnot as well.

Time to buy some hog ring pliers.

Pull the seat out of the truck, remove the fabric cover and either replace the foam, or pour isopropyl alcohol through the foam and squeeze the solvent out. Isopropanol should be sufficiently non-polar to get the naptha from the goo-gone into solution. A couple quarts should do it. Folllow up with shampooing.

Or, just replace the seat if you can find one at a scrap yard.

I second this... no reason to replace the seat if your willing to take a few hours to remove/re-install the seat foam.

    Good suggestions, all, thanks.

I do own a steam cleaner and was going to give this a try.

Funny you should mention this, I've got a vintage Mustang and a not-quite vintage Corvette that both need the seat covers replaced. Might as well get some practice in. ;) I read an article elsewhere on the web that suggested using pet odor remover. The spill was contained to the front edge of the seat where the foam isn't too thick so maybe this would work.

Maybe run a lot of hot water through the seat (remove seat first) to try to dilute the Goo Gone and carry it out the bottom? I don't know, just making stuff up..

I shampoo my seats about once a year and I'm surprised at how much gunk comes out of them. If this was me, I'd remove and clean/replace the foam. Junk yards around here leave their seats out in the elements so they're going to be gunked up too.

My plan for this weekend is to pull the seat out of the truck, then use a garden hose to flush water through the area of the seat where the spill occurred. Once most of the water has drained away I'm going to flush the area with some Natures Miracle odor remover, let that set for a while, then flush more water. Then let it dry and hope for the best. I've got both a steam cleaner and a rug shampooer with a hand attachment should I need to go that far. I'll post my results - wish me luck.:fingerscrossed:

Nature's Miracle is an enzyme-based deodorizer. It works great on water based stinky amines like cat piss. It won't work so well with goo-gone which is naptha based - and won't be very cost effective. Use soap and Isopropyl alcohol followed by clean water rinse. Febreeze would probably work OK but I hate how that shit smells. The isopropanol will work better for this application.

    Trust me - I'm a chemist

    dawn.

remove cover lightly wash, do same with foam. Of course more vigorously and let dry. It is naptha with an orange smell.

I have done the same with gas in an old truck.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I pulled the seat, laid the back down and propped it against the wall, then proceeded to flush the seat cushion with a water hose for about 5 minutes. I pressed the hose end against the seat cover to force water through the foam but it still wanted to spray back. There was water flowing out the bottom. I let that drain for a while then soaked it with Nature's Miracle (sorry, TaterHarry, I hadn't seen you post when I did it), then flushed it with the hose again for a couple minutes. I squeezed as much water out of it as I could. I left it standing against the wall in the sun the rest of Friday and most of Saturday. I reinstalled it Saturday afternoon even though the foam was still a little damp and I could get some water out of it when I squeezed it. The good news is that smell appears to be gone. Now I'm dealing with a damp seat for a while, which BTW turns into an ice block at 17°F.
