Hmm.. Certainly not an expert and everyone has their opinions and tastes... But imo, flowmaster sounds like garbage. As well as almost every other muffler swap/catback setup I could find. I listened to a TON of sound clips before deciding on mine.... In the end I went with Borla and a resonator. And I LOVE it. Not once do I regret it. And not once have i gotten tired of listening to it. You know, when they get theirs installed and like it, then eventually regret it like others have done as it gets annoying over time because they realize it's actually quite OBNOXIOUS! lol.

    Borla Pro xs
    ultra quiet resonator
    magnaflow high flow cat.

Almost wished I didn't opt for the resonator as it is pretty quiet and sounds so good I wouldn't mind it being a tad louder.. But I think without the resonator (having listened to other borla pro xs muffler swaps) it sounds like it'd be obnoxious.. It does have a fairly deep tone. Maybe not near as deep as others like the flowmaster, but it's SUPER clean sounding. Silent at warm idle. Great tone when accelerating; nice and deep but not obnoxious. Not so much "throaty". Probably more throaty without a resonator, with just the muffler swap.. But you're not gonna get that deep throaty sound out of our v6's. Unless you go straight pipes with larger diameter piping. Which actually sounds better (i've heard it in person and it's not too bad, surprisingly) than most of the throaty (v-8) mufflers people throw on!! lol... I've often wondered how it would sound increasing the pipe size with my setup. Think that would make it sound much deeper/better, but kept reading that was a big no-no for our engines... Anyways, what else... No popping or rasp (only slight popping when you rev it high like a ricer, heh). And a good quiet cruising tone (which I BARELY hear with the Windows up, and the radio off, which radio is never off, so yeah, pretty much silent in cab for me). Its like it was meant for the tacoma. And sounds like a yota should imo.

But again, I'm no expert.. But I think the resonator really helped and pairs well with the borla. And i personally think it sounds better than anything else I've heard. But to each their own. Listen for yourself op and decide. vids in my exhaust thread (more vids on page 2) here.

The Flowmaster 40 series muffler sounded really good on my 3.4. I got several compliments on how it sounded. It's pretty V8ish. Once you're over 3000rpm, it's rice mode like any muffler will be. But under that it sounded great

fm40 was my very first setup. like said. below 3k was real nice. after that things got bad. added a 12" resonator that helped alot.

I was gonna say the resonator should clean up and tone down about any "loud" muffler a lot and you'll still have that deeper tone, just not as overwhelming. So I'd pick the tone you like, install, if too loud add in a resonator. I couldn't find too many sound clips of people with resonators on some of the more popular brand mufflers.
Even my borla doesn't sound the greatest at really high rpms. But I never push it that hard anyways.

I have the 40 series on my truck now and I am in the process of replacing it due to it having a hole. I just can't tell if it's a 2.25" in/out or a 2.5" in/out. It looks like a 2.5" to me.

I like the sound of the 40 series on mine. It doesnt seem that loud though. I think I'm going back with the super 40.

I didn't think the 40 was really that loud either. Loud enough in the cab but outside it wasn't too loud. Sounded good though

40 series is like a middle ground, 50 series is gonna be a little mellower, but 10 series will be obnoxious. No matter what you put on it, a v6 will sound like crap once you get up there in rpm, v6s just don't sound good. You can change the actual tone with the diameter of tailpipe. Larger diameter is typically deeper, where as smaller diameter is more high pitched. Just remember, you can affect the powerband by changing pipe diameter, but if you leave the mid pipe(before muffler) alone it should have minimal effect.
